Letter That Is of Local Interest Records Past and Prospective of Some Yolo County Horses How in Training The following extracts from the Sac letter in the Breeder and Sportsman of this week are of local interest A young mare by Sable the property of Supervisor T C Snider of Yolo has as yet had no work to speak of bhe has worked a mile in a quarter In 36 seconds she has very pleasant way of going and is as a trotter as ever stepped on iron Her dam is by Harold and her breeding and performance mark her as a promising mare Mr Bigelow of Woodland has a string of four at the Sacramento track which he brought over about ten days ago They are as follows A by Alex Button dam by Del Ray She Is a paser and the property of O A Lowe of Wood land She is a very promising young lilly but will not start in the races this year A by the property of Jas Marshall of She Is a pacer aam by She stepped a half In recently with about four weeks work and did it In such as a way as to please Mr Blgelow also in Mr Hoys string He IB the property of Mr Ben Rush of In conformation lie looks a better horse than he ever was Air Hoy expects to give him a good mark before the season is over A black colt by Ora out of a dam by Belmont although a green horse without a record has Bhown good work and Is very promising A filly by Demonio out of a mare by Wilkes ia also in Mr Hoys string and he thinks one of the best prospects he ever han A green pacing horse by dam by Starling worked a mile today without an effort in going the last half tn Mr Hoy also has a green mare which he Is training for the district road races in Yolo county Walter Mastin brought his string of six over from Woodland about ten days ago Any one of them can go a mil better than The animals of this good string are as follows The best ot the lot at present Is John A by Wayland W dam Lady Moor by tha Moor which makes him very strong in breeding and one which can be look to for speed until the race is over He is dark seal In color stands 1614 bands in height and weighs about 1200 pounds For breeding as well as speed he should be considered as one the great stock horses of the state John A made a record two years ago at Woodland In the third heat of This horse today is in the pink of con dition and going strong and straight He paced a before leaving Wood land In Mr Mastin let him step tho last half at this track last Saturday which was a trifle slow that dayand for all that he did the half Wiln the last quarter in 30 seconds flat You can look for this horse to one of the coming horses of the state barring accidents The next best thing In string is Penrose by dam by Brigadier He Is now five years old He got a mark last year at the state fair of In the fourth heat He won the race there very handily Mr Mas tin looks for this to go a mile in before the season is over Third In the string Is Mayme H by being a full sister to and a In her work at Woodland she stepped a quarter In the last eighth in Mr Mastin thinks she Is the beat pros In his string She Is a fine mare bright bay and Is moving strong and straight Fourth Is Tuberose by FalroM dam Mischief by Brown Jng This is a square trotter and worked a mile at Wodoland about i two weeka ago In last half in the last quarter in 33 seconds finishing strong He has every prospect of being a great horse before the season is over Fifth is Maid a beautiful big mare by a square trotter per green and in only seven weeks work stepped a mile in at the Woodland track about ten days ago This inares first dam Is Tempest her second dam was a draft mare a full bred says Bhe is one of the marea he ever han and looks for her to trot a very fast mile before the races are over The breeding of this string of horses speaks volumes for Mr fine stallion Sixth Is a green pacer sired by Alex Button the property of A B Rodman of Woodland and with very little work moved a mile In at the Woodland track about eight days ago He Is a good looker and a very fine prospect Hi Hogoboom has flve in his string at present Among this lot is one of the best pacing colts in the state the property of Bart Cava This fellow has not been named as yet but his breeding is as good as anyone could ask for He is dam by Almont Patchen Stands about 163 and weighs about 1000 pounds In conformation ia about perfect and One of the handsomest colts In the state bright bay in color This fellow has stepped a half mile re cently In HI worked him the dther day the home quarter in 31 yt seconds He is not being prepared for races this year but just working him along good and easy but next year Mr Hogoboom says they will have to attend to their knitting when they beat this fellow out Mr Cava refused for his colt re cently The next is a horse belonging to James Farls Jr He is by George Dexter dam by Monroe Chief This is a trotter and has worked a mile in and as good a looker as one wants to see He has three in his string two by and one by All of these youngsters are Formed Social of Interest About ThOM Who Dwell in or Hear the City of Woodland year N D W A PRESENTATION Rev J J Morgan Lovingly Remembered The Christian Church Testifies to Its Affection for the Pastor That It Must Instead of the regular Sunday morn Ing service at the Christian church the congregation took charge and held a love feast to show at least a small part of their love and appreciation of their pastor Rev J J Morgan who Is compelled to leave his work here for a time at least Though completely taken by surprise Mr Morgan grace fully yielded to C W Thomas who In a way conducted the services The services were extemporaneous C M opened with a prayer Mrs Hopkins for the aid society Mrs Morrison for the C W B M Miss Holt for the young people Grandma and Elder B H Baker as old and faithful members of the church D P as one of the pioneers and Attorney Phil Bruton on behalf of the trustees all spoke In a manner which showed how much they felt the loss of Mr Morgan and his wife The general congregation was called on and several spoke among them J D Law son and Mrs S A Huston The choir gave several appropriate selections In closing the services Mr ThomajS presented with an elegant sterling silver coffee set on behalf of the professional and business men of the church In avery appropriate and able speech Mr Thomas set forth what Mr Morgan has done for the develop ment of hla town and county From the first he has allied himself with the chamber of commerce and every move ment that would tend to bring to Woodland and Yolo county what is their due Not only Is he loved and respected by tlie members of his own congregation but also by many out side his church and by many who arc of no church Mr Morgan answered feelingly and the services closed with Auld Lang Syne played by Mr Woolley on the organ At Sunday school Phil Bruton pre sented the Sunday school superintend ent Mrs Morgan with a plain gold ring on behalf of the school In an ex and feeling speech
