Woodland Daily Democrat (Newspaper) - May 2, 1902, Woodland, California WEEKLY ESTABLISHED 1859 WOODLAND CALIFORNIA FRIDAY EVENING MAY 2 1902 DAILY ESTABLISHED 1877 EXPRESS DELIGHT Pennsylvanians Enjoy a Yolo County Visit Personal Observation Convinces Mr and Mrs E T This Section Is Beat ORGANIZATION PERFECTED F W Buck Chosen President Califor nia Fruit Mr and Mrs Edward T of Pittsburg Pennsylvania who have been visiting Mr and Mrs S Wall left for today After visiting there a short time they will return to Sacramento on their way home They came to California about the 1st of February and were detained in Los Angeles much longer than they expected to stay on account of the ill ness or Mrs Jackson For that reason they will spend less time in the Sacra mento valley than they anticipated much to their regret as well as those who were fortunate enough to meet them A Democrat representative had a few moments conversation with Mr Jackson this morning and is Impressed with the idea that he is a gentleman of excellent judgment and a keen and observer Mr and Mrs Wall took their guests for a drive on Thursday and they were agreeably surprised with what they saw Both arts emphatic in the declaration that Yolo county is the liesl part of California they have visit ed In discussing the agricultural and horticultural possibilities they declare that those of the southern part of the state are not to be compared with those of Yolo county Mr Jackson Is particularly in his praise of the fertility of our soil arid the variety of our produc tions and he says lie never saw such a large and body of good land as was spread out before him on Thursday If there is one thing more than an that the people of the south pride themselves upon it is tho salubrity of their climate Mr Jackson to have acquired familiarity with all our climatic peculiarities and he prefers the climate of the Sacramento valley to tbat of Loa Angeles and when he Kays this he does not desire to be un as detracting anything from many advantages of that part of the state Considering the natural wealth and resources of Yolo county Mr Jackson expressed surprise that there has been so little development lie is amazed that our people do not seem lo appreciate the electrical irri gation and Industrial possibilities of part of the state He Is also surprised because so little is known about the county In the east In Pennsylvania nobody ever hears of the Sacramento valley except through letters received from relatives or friends Advertising matter concerning the southern part of the state is lated freely but there Is or has been so little literature sent out about tlie Sacramento valley that comparatively few people know that It Is on the map It can be depended upon that Mr and Mrs Jackson have a very exalted opinion of our natural advantages but they might hesitate to commend our enterprise It Is to be regretted that their stay among us was so brief SAN FRANCISCO May fruit arrived at home Thursday after an absence of about a month They left on the of March Their first stop was In Los Angeles where they spent 1C days dur ing which they made side trips to Cata lina island Pasadena and other points of interest In that vicinity They say that Los Angeles and en are very pretty and at tractive but they are the opinion that all the evidence of and pros observed on every hand Is in a great measure due to the vast amount of money spent by the eastern tourists nearly all of whom head di for that part of the state The tourist season was at its height when Mr and Mrs Rosenberg were In Los Angeles and the city was crowded The visitors began to thin out during the month of April but the number Is now nearly as large as ever owing to the convention of the club women From Los Angeles Mr and Mrs Rosenberg went direct to they spent about three weeks They were In Mexico two days and witnessed a bull fight They did not visit the oil districts El Paso Is a great business town but Mr Rosenberg was unable to learn much about the distribution of trade that brings about these conditions Two smelters are about the only local Industries of note but It is evident that El Paso Is a distributing center for outside districts otherwise its bus iness would not be BO voluminous The country to be seen from the car window during a journey to and from El Paso Is pot very Inviting The climate la dry dusty and rather disa greeable when compared with that of California Mr Rosenberg says Texas is a good state to do business In but for a resi dence more comfort can bo found In Yolo than In the whole state of Texas While they had a delightful trip Mr and Mrs Rosenberg say It Is a very pleasant experience to be at home again events Mr North who gave the boys a splendid tall on athletics yesterday suggested that a hearse be provided to carry his remains off the Held Percy has been elected yell leader and the audience will not lack for noise The management respectfully re quests all spectators to remain off the oval This is to facilitate the work of the and to obviate any possi of accident The Marysville boys will be tendered a reception at the school hi the even ing No branch of athletics is so clean and gentlemanly as track and field and it Is to be hoped that the good peo ple of Woodland will encourage the boys by their presence and support
