the closest attention an manifestations of the keenest In terest from the beginning to the clos by every person present During the lecture Dr Simmons In mentioned that he ha P written a book In which he gives minute description of all he saw an his many interesting and varied expe and observations from th time he left New York until he lande at the same place on the return trip This book is now in the hands of th printer and will shortly he Issued Everybody who has heard both lee tures recognizes the necessity for sue a hook Dr Simmons is a rapid an fluent talker Upon each occasion h haa spoken two hours but in these tw lectures he has only succeeded in car his audience as far as Egypt Obviously there yet remains muc to be said and as Dr Simmons Is keen and close observer and origina and vigorous in his descriptions hi hook will no doubt find ready sale an be widely read In his first lecture Dr Simmons re H lated his experiences in London Rom and Athens passing very W over tiie other cities and countries h I visited I In his second lecture he began in Palestine and closed in Egypt H described Palestine as the most deso late and forbidding on earth so far as the physical aspect is con cerned There Is scarcely a tree to b seen anywhere The only timber uel Is scarcely worthy of the name Wil lows cottonwood and along the banks of the streams The river Jordan was described a a stream ot water for a par of its course while the remainder ii dark sullen and swift Dr Simmons witnessed a wedding In Palestine and his description of 1 was exceedingly interesting Thi bride was not present during the cere mony which was weird and fantastic The custom among the natives is when a young man meets a young wo man he desires to make his wife he tells his father about it The father of the wouldbe groom goes to the father of the young woman If he looks upon the proposal with favor lie goes to the chief who fixes tho amount of the dowry the proom must pay In arranging all these details the young woman is not consulted may not meet her husband for two or three days after the cere mony Dr Simmons description of the fun eral of a little child was graphic and interesting When a child dies a stranger is selected to bear it to the cemetery No Is used Wood Is so scarce that they cannot afford to use it for coffins The child IB borne In the arms of a stranger and the cov ering is a cloth Some of the mourn ers precede the corpse and others fol low it and all while on the way give utterance to wails and doleful Bounds No graves are Aug The body of the child Is laid on the will miss a great treat THE MOTHERS The mothers meeting held by th ladles of tho W C T U at the hom of Mrs W S White was largely at tended The program consisted Scripture reading and prayer voca solos recitations and some papers Refreshments were serve and a social time followed Mrs Whites home was beautiful decorated for the occasion Curie crepe paper was festooned from tli ceilings and potted Representatives to a Convention The executive committee ot th Woodland chamber of commerce he an interesting and important meetin Thursday evening Notice was serve on the members by postal card an It is gratifying to record that in ever instance save three there was a pep sonal response The three Bidwel Diggs and Gibson are among the mos active and energetic members of th chamber of commerce and never mis a meeting unless their absence is un avoidable All three of them out of town Thursday evening The full attendance and unusual in terest manifested may be accepted a evidence that a recent editorial appea of the Democrat was not in vain and is already bearing good fruit President Thomas upon taking th chair expressed the pleasure it gav him to see so many members He explained that his purpose in call ing the meeting was to determine th future ot the chamber The time ha arrived when the body must have th and support of the bus iness men of this city if it is to con longer in existence He said n dues have collected for severa and the few members been doing the work ot the chambe have compelled to defray the ex penses out of their own funds Secretary Huston read a statemen Stephens Grant Morris Laugenour Spaulding am Reith participated in the discussion o proposed methods of raising funds to sustain the chamber Among the many suggestions offered was one that the business men be asked to pledge a regular monthly subscription It ii not expected that these subscription will be an equal amount but in pro portion to the value of business Inter ests of the subscriber Mr Laugenour suggested that es In coupon form be Issued a coupon to be detached as each monthly sub is paid He also made a mo tion that a committee of three be ap pointed to devise ways and means The motion prevailed and President Thomas was allowed 24 hours within to make the appointments Mr Thomas intimated that he would ap loint three members in addition to the chairman of the membership commit ee Mr who by virtue of his position would he a mem er of the committee Mr Spaulding made a motion which that all outstanding claims be allowed and paid Mayor Craig suggested that
