A MASKED THIEF Robs Mrs Praet and Daughter in San Francisco Burglar Secures Thirty Dollars in Cash and Jewels Worth Six Hundred Dollars SPECIAL MEETING The Board of Supervisors to Stamp Out Glanders Ed Praet received a telegram Wed afternoon informing him that a burglar had robbed his wife and daughter in San Francisco The Ex of today contains the follow ing particulars A masked burglar climbed through a iront window In the residence of Mrs Edward Praet 1710 Bush street at an early hour Wednesday morning Alter compelling Mrs Vincent Wood bury and Mrs Julia Stumpf to keep si lent and threatening to kill them he stole cash and jewels valued at The detectives searched In vain Wednesday for some clue to the Iden tity of the robber but the thief had left nothing behind him except burnt matches In the hallway and bers of the house Mrs Woodbury was the chief loser ns all the jewels belonged to her She fs tlie wife of V Woodbury a travel Ing man employed by D wholesale grocer of Sacramento and son of Charles J Woodbury of Oak land Mr and Mrs Woodbury live in Woodland but arrived here a short time ago to visit Mrs Edward Praet Mrs mother Mrs Wood bury spent Tuesday night alone her husband being out of the city It was about 4 oclock In the morn Ing said Mrs Woodbury when I heard my bedroom door open and followed the souad of nome one stealthily moving toward me I was dreadfully frightened and cried out Who IB it Who Is It Tell me Tell A voice whispered in my epr or I will Trembling In every limb I laid still but pulled all five of my rings from ray fingers and let them fall on the bed beside me J then held my hands to my throat expecting that the burglar might attempt to strangle me He struck B match and I saw Urat he wore a black mask under which pro the ends of a long red mous tache After feeling my ears and throat ho reached under my pillow and took my purse While In my room he struck many matches but had no other light On leaving Mrs room the burglar went out In to the hallway and broke open a trunk In which he found and most ot the jewelry From the he next invaded Mrs Stumpfs room compelling her to keep by threatening to take her life I was awakened by a hand touch Ing my throat said Mrs Stumpf I gasped Intending to cry out when the man pressed bis hand upon me and As soon as the cases of glanders were reported Wednesday morning the four members of the supervisors now lu the county were summoned and a special meeting was held late day afternoon Chairman Russell and Supervisors Vaughn Decker and Hop pin were present After discussing the hoard arrived at the unanimous opinion that prompt and effective measures to eradicate the dis ease are necessary With that end In view Dr McLean was appointed coun ty veterinarian at a salary of a mouth to act during the pleasure of the board Dr Lawhead representing the county board health and Dr McLean attended the meeting ot the board Dr McLean can be depended upon to take such vigorous
