Company A Forceful Womanly Protest Against Rowdyism That Thrilled the Sympathetic Audience A audience witnessed Thursday evening as pre sented by Jessie Shirley and her com pany The performance given was one of If not the best during the week Miss again ted that she is an actress of ble versatility She excels In comedy not a few doubted that she would he capable of bringing out the wonder ful emotional scenes required That she succeeded was evidenced by the hearty applause she received Of course Shirley is not a Nance ONeil or a Modjeska in the title role but It is safe to say that no other act ress playing at popular prices Is capa ble of presenting the famous character in a more finished manner She wore some magnificent gowns which cre ated quite a stir among the feminine portion of the audience Tile support In nearly every instance was good Mr George McQuarrie worked con and with some degree of success as Armand Duval one of the most difficult roles Mr Gilbert as Armands father was His makeup was perfect The audience again manifested a strong appreciation for Mr Ralston He should appear Miss Adams was the Madame Pru dence of the play and succeeded ad especially in the dinner scene where she caused much amusement 1 Her makeup and costumes were wor thy of mention In fact the piece was to teach a few peo ple a lesson they should have learned long ago Of course the company will not hold all those who were in the gal lery responsible for the acts of a few The great majority of those who were thero deeply regretted the interrup tion and hey have a high apprecia tion of a good company and a finished Of course no blame attaches to the management As soon as the disturb ance occurred Mr Webber took prompt steps to prevent a repetition He is to be commended for his efforts to prevent any disorder that will an noy tho patrons of tho theater This evening the company will be seen In DEnnery and Carmens mas The Two Orphans Here Is a play which enjoys an unbroken rec ord of success extending over a period of 25 years an endorsement rarely given to any play Tho story is too well known to require any extended mention here Like the classics it Is one of the plays which only ripen with age and it Is the performance and not the play which is judged In this case a firstclass production Is promised with special scenery and all the necessary adjuncts which go to make up the same The Shirley com pany has established a reputation for fulfilling its promises and It is safe to infer that this will be no exception to the rule Little Lord Fauntleroy a for children of all ages will be the Shirley as a mati nee Saturday afternoon This play not only furnishes a splendid en but It contains a lesson in patience and forbearance which could he profitably learned by all re of age or position Little Verna Pelton has demonstrated her ability here and her performance of Mrs Burnetts little hero will be looked forward to with interest SMALLPOX GASES Six in Town but to the role Marsky was also entirely satis factory Win Abrams Frank McQuarrie L tinier and Miss Clara Lawrence added strength to the support The singing specialties of little Ver na Felton are attractive features of ev ery performance This gifted child actress will play Lord at the Saturday matinee and every wo man anil child who has never seen the play presented properly should attend petals performance musical program rendered by the Shirley orchestra was a pleasing feature ot last evenings The sextette from and the se lection from La Traviata were great ly enjoyed Miss Shirley achieved the greatest triumph of her present engagement last evening and it came as the climax ot an incident not on the program During one of the most pathetic scenes when Shirley was doing her best there was an tion of rowdyism in the gallery that aroused the Indignation of those who were deeply stirred by pathos and Intense emotionalism portrayed by her splendid performance The entire company was evidently much embar but none of them made any protest until the scene was concluded Miss Shirley then came before the footlights and in a brief speech mod erate in expression dignified In man ner womanly In feeling but withal and direct rebuked those who were responsible for the unseemly In It was a trying moment and the plucky little actress was equal to tho emergency There was no lation no manifestation of anger no evidence of embarrassment every went direct to the mark and her audience was thrilled with 1 the dramatic intensity and earnestness It was an incident that will not soon be forgotten and will no have a wholesome and restrain ing influence upon those who falling to understand and appreciate a per have no the of others After all perhaps the Incident should not n yery
