Woodland Daily Democrat (Newspaper) - December 23, 1901, Woodland, California ESTABLISHED 1877 WOODLAND CALIFORNIA MONDAY EVENING DECEMBER 23 1001 PRICE FIVE CENTS A SUDDEN DEATH George D Stephens Expired Unexpectedly Sunday Was Thought to be Recovering From a Cold When a Stroke Stilled Hia Pulses George D Stephens died at his resi dence near Madison about oclock Sunday morning December The end was sudden and unexpected and the announcement was a great sur prise and painful shock to the many friends of the family Mr Stephens was taken sick with a severe cold a little over two weeks ago but gener ally speaking his health was belter during the past year than It had been for some time previously Something over two weeks ago he contracted a severe cold while Inspecting the work of the new irrigation system as a re sult of which his lungs were consider ably congested But he did not regard his affliction as serious and it required tho earnest persuasion of his family and the almost Imperative command of his physician Dr Lawhead to in duce him to take to his bed Sunday morning he was apparently much improved when he awoke To several members of the family he said he felt better and breathed easier than he had for several days prior and he enquired about the weather with a view of getting up and moving about in the open air He conversed cheer fully with his wife his daughter Mrs OConnor and his oldest son John With the latter he briefly discussed future plans concerning tho manage ment of his extensive property All of the family except Mr Stephens met at the breakfast table Mrs OConnor was the first to return to her fathers room She was quick to notice a great change in his condition and spoke to but he made no response She summoned the rest of the fam ily but It was too late to afford him relief and he passed away with out speaking again or apparently ree any member of his family His physician says death was due to a stroke of apoplexy George O Stephens was a native of Missouri he was born on the 24th of September 1826 He left Coop er county for California on the 10th of May 1849 and arrived In Sacramento the 6th of August 0 the While Mr Stephens was intensely active in business affairs he always found time to be one of the kindliest tenderest and most generous of men His home life was spotless and be bore his wife and children the deep est and tenderest affection which sen timent was fully reciprocated His iold upon the esteem and affection of those who knew him best was secure and it is difficult for those who
