New Armory Hall Friday Evening Given Under the Auspices of the Young Ladies Social Club of Christian The young ladles social club of the Christian church showed both taste and Kood business sense in the and management of a very unique entertainment which was giv en ill new armory hall Friday even ing It was out of the or and so novel that it inspired the best efforts of the members from the moment it was first suggested and their and enthusiasm un usual interest among their friends All day Friday the various committees veve busy completing the details put ting on the touches to the decorations and enlisting the sympa thies ot their friends The young la dies were particularly active in their missionary work and their persistent buttonholing ami importuning served to remind us an election day The members of the society were as near equally divided aa possible The division was made by calling the roll and the red and white banners alternated hi choice As a result hus band aud wife were often arrayed against each other under opposing col ors Morgan appeared to be one of the chiefs in the red rose and he did some very clever work hut his cleverness was in a great measure oiled by his popular wife who was one of the leaders under the white rose Hag The attendance was good The ad mission at the door netted About twothirds of tie main hail was enclosed by the contending sides and he space was equally divided A Kire running north and south in the Snter of the hall fixed the dividing line The decorations were very ate and very pretty The committee in charge of the decorations for the white rose side consisted of Mrs Mor gan MnT Harley Hurling Mrs Wm Browning Misses Grace Holt and Julia Boggs and they had a number vol assistants The red rose committee was made up of Mrs G R Mrs May Brown Mrs W Y Browning Mr and Mrs Gist the Misses Eakle Nellie Bullock Clara Bell Griffin Brown Mary Browning Irma Brown lug Ruby Garrette Grace Craig and Ora Stephens Of course the white rose was a dis feature in the white booth and some very flue specimens were ex White crepe paper and ropes of smilax were tho features of the overhead decorations Ivy on the bal cony and asparagus ferns on tlie wire netting were used with very pleas ag effects Potted plants hanging mirrors and asparagus ferns were the features in the dining room The special illuminations were green and white incandescent lights De lemonade was served from a large punch bowl The menu consist ed of chicken salad dainty wafers olives salted almonds icecream an gel food cake and coffee A bevy of pretty ranging from ten to fif teen years of age gave admirable ser vice in the dining room In tho red booth the decorations ware exquisite Tho arch over tho was particularly beautiful Hcd roses ribbons and smilax formed tho and the arc of red incandescent lights completed a very pretty picture The design over liond was in red streamers Tho wire netting on tho south was a of rod geraniums smilax and red satin ribbons The oust balcony in pepper branches hanging baskets and bows of red crepo paper On tho east wall woro mirrors muskets haver sacks and other accoutrements of Coni George Ray and Elmer Van Tassell in uniform and carrying muskets acted as sentinels at the entrance Mastor Edwin Bodoll in Lord suit of bright crimson acted us and little as Refreshments were served in apart ments former with the aid of pretty folding screens The decorations were lowers and potted plants The menu consisted of chicken salad dain chips coffee peppermint ms icecream and orange food Cool and refreshing lemonade was served during the entire evening The white rose adherents opened the program with a very pretty tiou La Polka rendered by the following members of the mando lin club Mrs W H Lawson Misses Kate and Miss Carmen Clowe and Mr H Mis Steiner Mrs Campbell H Browning and George Craig sang a very pretty quartette My I So Well The fam A B C duet was well rendered by Miss Mattie Garrette and George Craig Mrs Delia sang Could 1 In splendid voice A very funny little farce entitled Why Mrs Gaskill Didnt Hire a Cook was the next number on the program Miss Grace Holt ated Mrs Gaskell and her guest was Mrs Harley The applicants were Mrs I P Diggs as Susan High head dressed in all the colors of the rainbow George Craig cleverly made up as a Chinaman Miss D Campbell who didnt want the position unless the landlady could speak Latin and French fluently Miss Mattie Garrette who bad the swagger and vernacular of the tough girl down to a fine point and Miss El ma Goln who had the manners and brogue of au Irish girl who could cook like an angel An favorite Cousin Jede brought out Mrs Carrie Gray Mrs J J Morgan Mrs W H Brown ing Mrs I P Diggs Miss Mabol ook W H Browning George Craig and T ester Rhodes Their costuming ivas exceedingly funny and by many this feature was considered tho best on the program After this number Rev J J Morgan announced the beginning of the red rose program Misa Leonoro Cummins rendered in a very artistic manner on tho piano Sixth Rhapsody Mrs Steiner aud W H Browning ang very sweetly Goodbye Sweet Day Two Little introduced two little sprites Helen Rosenberg and Dorothy Porter who aoon demon tho fait that there are some things that children can do as well as their mothers Mrs May gave very effectively a humorous recitation enti tled She Wanted to Learn Elocution Tho closing number a quartet entitled The Auctioneer splendidly rendered by Misses Mary Browning and Abbio Eakle and Gist and Browning It was then announced that refresh ments woro ready to he served aud for the next hour the refreshment tables were well patronized Everybody was also invited to cast a ballot ex pressing an opinion as to which was entitled to Uie palm of victory Three hundred and eightythree votes were cast auci the white rose ents won by a margin of The wearers of the red rose took defeat good naturedly comforting them selves with the thought that their re exceeded those of their success ful opponents by Not Too Funny Now and then some crank conies along and professes something that Is to be too funny Thats all right for Napa or Stockton but Woodland is sane and orderly and so The Old Maids in the inimitable farce O Its a Man are just enough for just as funny as one can stand Our local stars who are fine arc In It and the whole matter is pointed toward October 21st at p m Watch for the bills and the con undrum show window guess cards English Walnuts John Martin who lives west of Woodland has two English walnut trees that are 15 years old and have been in hearing for only 2 years A M Eaton sold him the young trees and he is selling a great number of slips to those who have concluded to graft the English walnut on other stock The nuts on the Martin trees are very large and of good flavor Hanson Was It Oakland received another severe drubbing Friday from the hands of San Francisco The score was 131 Hanson had the distinction of having scored the only run and only stolen base for his team He also managed to secure one of the three hits made by Oakland Attention Company F Members of Company F will please
