William and Tom former residents of the town of Remington was brought before Justice Keyes Wednesday attorney R E Andrews for the state and W E Wheelan attorney for the defendants After hearing Justice Keyes dismissed th case against William th state having failed to show any whatever to sustain the charge Th costs to be charged to the county There were two charges brought u against the other defendent the en into a contract to build a road for th town of Remington while a town the second receiving an from th township Upon the with of the second charge Mr Cumm ng plead guilty to the first offense an was brought before Judge Webb wh Imposed a fine of and costs amounted to The result nf this case sustains th judgment of the LEADER uttered at th time when the Cummings brothers wer brought back to Wood county from fa The very fact that the cas was given tu the public as euch an one und that Sheriff had to exert cuch strenuous efforts In conjunction with high paid detectives U locate his men all looked fishy to us as the whereabouts of the brothers were wellknown It look ed as if the officials were attempting to bolster up in the public mind wba they regarded as a weak case and weak it certainly upon a showing I shows bad judgment en the part of the officials In undertaking at case of tha character at all The county will un have to pay the expense which will amount to or but before the board allows these It to impress upon the minds ot theae officials that no more folly of kind will be tolerated TO BEAUTIFY SCHOOL GROUNDS Suggestions Offered Toward the City Contributed The schools and the Federated club of the city have done much toward beautifying our city and our schools and toward cultivating a taste for the beautiful and artistic among the rising generation We appreciate their and applaud what they have done and are doing now It is therefore with no desire to criticize that we offer a suggestion or two Many beautiful pieces of statuary and works ot art adorn the rooms of our High School building That is as it should be We hope the public by generous gifts and by their patronage of such en- as the schools may see to present will make it possible that this good work may progress still urther But would ic not be well to beautify outside as well as The grounds surrounding this and other school buildings are bare and unlovely A few dollars wisely expended would go far toward relieving the bare un- kempt appearance of all our school grounds Particularly true is this ot the grounds of the Lincoln building The pupils there are old to take an interest in keeping the grounds beautiful and in preserving lawns and shrubbery The oaks which shade a part of the grounds are rapidly dying Unless something is done all will be dead in a few years They belong to a class which it is commonly said can not thrive if the underbrush ia cut away and perhaps because of this opinion nothing is being done to preserve them They can be preserved if they are supplied with water They die when the underbrush is cut away because the underbrush re- tains the moisture which the trees need Cutaway the brush and supply the necessary moisture and these trees with the addition of occasional top-dressing will thrive and continue to be things of beauty Much is being said and done about supplying parks for the city Why not park our school grounds which located as they are are admirably adapted to this We wish to commend the of the Federated clubs re- garding the signs of a certain milling company which deface the city Would it not be well to extend this form of persuasion and refuse to patronize any company or firm which defaces the scenery in and about our city larly the rocka in the Also the boya employed by our merchants to de- liver should be instructed to see to it that these bills are left at the in such a way that they cannot become the sport of the wind The present custom is to drop them on the front porch to be blown into the street by the first gust of wind Teams Get and Piny Fast Jlall VS STEVENS The Grand Rapids TIgera by an enthusiastic crowd of fans hied themselves to Stevens Point Sunday morning and returned winners of I the third game of the series with the local team of that city A crowd of fully people assembled at the diamond to witness the exciting contest between the fairly evenly matched teams In
