the death of Phil Ward spread over the city Wednesday after- noon causing many expressions of re- gret among his numerous friends He passed away quietly at his home on Washington avenue 2 o'clock The funeral will take place Friday ing at 10 o'clock at the Catholic church Mr Ward was about 65 years of age was born in Ireland and came to this country when about 15 years of age at Portage A few years later he came to Grand Rapids and has since made this city his home When lumber ng was the principal industry in this country he was employed iu this ness He served one term as sheriff of Wood county the gold mining fever of Alaska swept over the country he aud his sons Emmet and Wilbur went tn Alaska where the boys have since but he returned after two years absence Six months ago he received a paralytic stroke and has since been in very poor health He was a generous hearted man many friends whose esteem he retained during his long residence in this city Besides his wife he is survived by
