Mon day Morning This city experienced the most trous fire Monday morning that has 6c cured here for more than a and bu for the prompt aud efficient work of th fire department even greater destruction of property and possibly loss of life would certainly have occurred The alarm was given by night policeman E C Kellogg of the west side who wen there at o'clock and found a terrible fire raging in the house with the smoke pouring out every crevice and appar ently not a soul about the premises aware of the danger they were all in HI dashed into the house aroused the in mates and sent in a fire alarm but th halls especially of the upper stories o the building were already so filled with smoke and fire that there wa no escape by this means for the large number of guests occupying rooms in these quarters Everybody was soon awake but the next question was how to escape Only three people had rooms near enough the fire escape at the rear of the house t make use of it They were W E Ule the contractor Dr Waters and E Curtiss representing the Evening Wis consin of Milwaukee all of terre firma safely by this means The balance of the guests found the means of getting away from the terrible Hames was to jump from the windows o their rooms Bedding and were thrown out of the rooms to make a soft place to light upon on the groun beneath and everybody jumped Strange to say only two men were injured bv these perilous leaps for life J G Chandler the Racine architect who hai had charge of the new high school build ing jumped from the third story and by the direction and assistance of friends es caped without a scratch Jos Whitney long a well-known resident of this cit and a man 76 age jumped from the second story window but was quit badly wrenched in his side He is being cared for at the home of his daughter Mrs Wm Scott of High street but it Is thought that he will experience no per injury from the fall P H Davis the liveryman is laid up at pres ent with badly wrenched not of a permanent nature H Cohen a traveling salesman ot go waa a pretty badly scared man when he was making the flying high jump but he lit all right and only mourns the loss of a few sample trunks and some personal effects that he left in the room behind him Geo N Wood was the coolest man in the bunch and when he came to earth from the second story he was properly groomed and dressed for his appearance on the street Pew ever were at all particular about themselves for a public appearance anc were glad to get down amongst the ple in any old shape The fire laddies afterward got most everybody their clothes and personal effects so that there were only trifles lost in this way though quite a number of guests left money and other valuables when they quit their rooms Uncle John and Mrs Dixon who roomed ou the ground off the parlor had considerable trouble in effecting an escape through the windows and Uncle John who tried go out and investigate through the hall had his hair and eyebrows badly scorched Under the circumstances everybody was extremely lucky to cape with so little injury The fire originated in the basement but how nobody knows It burned up the stairs halls in the rear of the building thus second floor and from there spread to the halls and on the third floor The whole rear of the house will have to be but the front rooms and office will only need new wood work and Much furniture and bedding were either totally destroyed or greatly damaged by fire and water The properly was insured for about and to all appearances the damages will be that much or more As soon as the insurance is adjusted the re- building of the hotel will begin and be pushed to completion Owing to the act that all of the hotels of the city have been crowded for the past year the suspension of business at the will be felt by the traveling ic until it is in operation again Still everybody who comes here will be fur- with a comfortable place to eat and sleep Moved To Merrill M A ers in Grand Rapids since bis location here nearly two years apo is Dr F D Humphrey the only homoeopathic in this city Very little agement was given the doctor when he came here from Clintonville to look the ground over It was generally thought that there was already a surplus in the medical profession here and that a homoeopathist especially would find the pasturage pretty poor picking daunted the doctor came and he enjoyed a lucrative practice from the start which past year has grown into one that works the doctor to his full capacity This from a :financial Standpoint is very pleasing but what is more gratifying to him and his patients is the almost uni- form success that has attended his cal and medical operations and his ability to perform wonders in the healing of the sick and disabled is now pretty generally known and conceded But the doctor is ambitious for greater achievements and to more thoroughly prepare himself for the Work he has in view he has concluded to take a graduate course in the York Homo- College and Hospital and will take his departure for New York City on Saturday April The course is an advanced study of surgery and the diseases of women and children designed for practitioners and is limited to a class of one hundred and will take about four weeks to complete This is one of the leading homoeopathic of the United and an being made to have Dr Lorenz the celebrated of bloodless surgery demonstrate his practice before this class BAND CONCERT To-night Thursday the Grand Rapids Baud will give their first concert of the season on Cranberry street west THE WITTER Don't Like Idea of a Dam Site Above j Green Bay tfridge Headers of the LEADER will remember j that this paper was the first in the city to herald the news dam across the Wisconsin river at this point was to bo built this year and that the location of j the dam would bo across the rapids from a point near the old Pioneer Pulp Co mill to the Grand Chute island near the Electric Water Co plant This ment was afterward denied by lications but it was nevertheless known that the Consolidated Water Power per Co preferred this site to the ona above the Groen Bay bridge which was said to be the one where the dam would be built Now there is a move on foot by the citizens of the town to have the mill company build on the site above ed below the Green Bay bridge and are being circulated which are be- ing readily signed asking the power company to build the dam on this site There are many reason best location although why this is the the cost to the HELP THIS WORK ALONG Those company will readily concede to the desires of the especially if the petitions are generally signed The location of the so far down town will not despoil the rapids of their beauty as it would if located above the bridge It would tie near the foot of the rapids and no ial difference would be noticed in the river except that there would be a beau- pond for purposes where now ugly rocks create a fury in the idly running water that few boatmen dare brave The LEADER heartily endorses the change and hopes the petitions will be signed by everybody Death of 0 t Boynton Mrs Boynton nee Nina Briggs
