PRESENT OPINIONS jt After a protracted discussion the Wood county board of supervisors at this morning's session went on record as approving the state highway proposed plan to add two cents per gallon to the present gas tax in order to secure sufficient funds to build 000 miles of concrete road on what are known as the through road systems during the next ten years The action came upon a tion from the county road com- through its chairman Super- visor Amos Hasbrouck endorsing the plan as a good one the gas tax being regarded as the best sible method of money for highway use but specifying that the annual appropriation for town roads which are those unattached either to the federal state or ty trunk systems shall be per mile instead of as at present per mile The resolution also placed the board on record as affirmative action on the plan by the legislative of the county When the previous question finally ended the discussion a viva voce vote was taken but some of the members called for a roll call and the vote stood 34 ayes eleven nays one not voting and two absent Jt A Highway Session The entire morning was taken up with matters pertaining to ways Immediately following the roll call and approval of the utes Supervisor Hasbrouck man of the county road committee and began offering his routine resolutions At the time of adjournment at he stated to the chair that what he had left to report would take only about fifteen minutes There were seven of these resolutions and all were adopted without debate Then the resolution referring to the increased gas tax was read by Supervisor Hasbrouck to whose committee the matter had been re- ferred and Supervisor Kraus Marshfield was the first to speak after Mr Hasbrouck had carefully made plain the nature of the posal Mr Kraus said he could not support the resolution and read some figures showing tax against cars is per year on the average and he did not think it should be increased at this time Supervisor Bean replied that the automobiles and other property will be taxed anyway unless we get the money for roads on a gas tax Gas Tax Easiest Supervisor Hasbrouck stated tha? the automobile would be of no use unless we had roads to drive them on and that the only way the roads can be built is money He argued that the easiest way to raise the money was by a gas tax which was paid only few cents at a time whereas a property tax is paid all at once Supervisor Bailey considered this plan as a part of the usual ganda sent out by the state If Milwaukee Racine and Kenosha counties are against he thinks Wood should oppose it Mr Hasbrouck then explained that while these three counties own and operate about 60 per cent of all the cars in the state they already have most of their roads built and naturally the money raised by their gas tax will be spent in the er counties where the roads have not yet been so well improved He is confident that the promised in the state highway commission plan will take
