but critics want change
By Bruce Cheadle OTTAWA Business as usual is not an option, media watchers said yesterday as the CBC showed signs of emerging from a sevenweek lockout thats fractured its television and radio audiences. Heritage Minister Liza Frulla suggested the public broadcaster has suffered collateral damage and its time to reassess where the CBC is headed. Because after seven weeks, I would say to relaunch the CBC. The Crown corporation reached a memorandum of agreement late Sunday night with about 5,500 employees whove been locked out since Aug. 15. Negotiating the fine print of the tentative agreement continued yesterday, with ratification votes expected to start Thursday and be completed by Sunday afternoon. It could be up to a week after ratification before regular programming hits the airwaves. Although CBC and its workers have finally reached common ground in their contract dispute, it will be awhile before things return to normal and all the familiar voices and faces including chief anchor Peter Mansbridge are back on the air. We would like to have people back to work and our regular schedule up by the end of next week, CBC spokesman Jason MacDonald said yesterday. Many of the new shows CBC was touting were scheduled to debut in mid-season anyway, including Mary Walshs six-episode comedy Hatching, Matching and Dispatching, and a series from Ken Finkleman about the inhabitants of a strange hotel.
