Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - August 2, 2005, Winnipeg, Manitoba The Weather / B 8 Crank up the A/ C! Sunny Wind S 20 km/ h. High 31 — Low 21 GARBAGE DAY 3 T HE Hughes family vacation began with the sounds of an aboriginal drummer, the whirl of a traditional dancer and the sight of two RCMP officers in full dress uniform. “ Stunned,” was how Jenny Hughes described her reaction to the enthusiastic welcome our visiting Brits received at the airport Sunday night. Free Press readers, drummer George Spence, Barbara and Clarence Nepinak of the Red Sons Dance Group, Mounties Steve Saunders and Sue Downs and Fairmont hotel rep Patti Fanslau crowded the arrivals gate to give the family their first taste of Friendly Manitoba. “ I didn’t know where to look first,” Jon Griffiths, Jenny’s 20- year- old son, said yesterday. “ We had no idea there was anything like this planned.” The family, which also includes daughter Kate, 23, will spend the next two weeks experiencing the very best of Winnipeg and the surrounding area. With the help of our readers and the hard work of the staff at the Fairmont, they’ll be treated royally. The girl was riding on the craft with her mother, two sisters aged eight and 10, and her mother’s boyfriend, who was driving during the accident at 4: 30 p. m. Sunday. The boyfriend wasn’t aware the river drops over a dam where the water churns so strongly that it is marked by a sign on shore that calls it “ the drowning machine” and says that “ venturing near this weir is risking death.” By the time the driver realized the danger, it was too late, according to a family member who was at the scene of the tragedy yesterday. “ When he saw what it was, he tried to turn around, but it sucked him over the edge,” said the family member, who came from Killarney to pick up the recovered watercraft and asked not to be identified. Police are not releasing the names of the missing girl and the four other people involved in the accident until the rest of their family is notified. The two adults managed to swim to shore and the two other girls were saved by members of the Souris Fire Department’s water rescue unit. The children were wearing life- jackets, but the fouryear- old’s jacket was likely torn off by the strength of the current, according to police. “ We did recover one life- jacket that came from the child who’s missing,” Souris RCMP Sgt. Bob Chabot said yesterday. “ It came off, from what we understand.” Continued Please see DROWNING A 4 By Kevin Rollason T HE highest water levels in Lake Winnipeg in more than 30 years have eroded shorelines, flooded docks and beaches and contaminated wells. Dave Crabb, acting president of the Manitoba Association of Cottage Owners, said the high water levels are playing havoc with cottagers around the lake. Crabb said lakefront cottagers are seeing their land disappear into the lake while other cottagers are having to pump out their septic tanks on a weekly basis — if their tank is still in the ground. “ The holding tanks are popping out of the ground all over the place,” he said. “ The plumbers are working long hours all the time trying to keep up with pumping out the tanks. “ Good wells all over the place — which people have had for many years — are getting leeching from surface pollution into the wells. Anytime it rains for even five minutes we have puddles because the water has no place to drain. “ It’s just unheard of.” Crabb said the clay soil has been so saturated it has expanded to the point of cracking open many underground water pipes. A second- generation cottager who has a lakeside cottage in Boulder Bay on the east side of Lake Winnipeg, Crabb said he has never seen the water levels as high as this year. He said this season he has already lost about three metres of his property into the lake. “ In the last 30 days there hasn’t been room to put an old- fashioned beach chair on the sand and stretch your feet out — and that’s even when there’s no wind,” he said. Crabb isn’t too hopeful conditions will change soon. “ Right now, water levels in the Whiteshell are six to nine feet above normal and all that water is heading our way, roaring down the Winnipeg River.” On nearby Grand Beach Provincial Park, the water is so high this year that at times it has touched the boardwalk, Crabb said.
