Manitoba’s chief medical examiner said yesterday he is seeking answers into the March 28 death of Henry Willard Okemow, who was found hanging in a closet inside a home on God’s Lake Narrows. Dr. Thambirajah Balachandra said Henry is the youngest suicide victim he’s ever seen in the province. “ He had apparently told his family he was going to hang himself, but the family said he was laughing and joking and nobody thought he would do it,” said Balachandra, who will meet with police and social workers to determine if a public inquest should be called. “ We are going to go through this case with a fine- toothed comb and try and find out what this was all about.” Henry — who would have turned nine tomorrow — followed the same tragic footsteps as his 11- year- old brother, Buddy, who took his own life in December 2002. “ We’ve lost two of our boys like that,” Henry’s shaken mother, Loretta Okemow, told the Free Press yesterday from her parents’ home in God’s Lake Narrows. She hadn’t seen Henry since last year. “ It’s hard for me right now. I can’t even think straight,” she said. Incense wafted through the church where he will be laid to rest Friday in an ancient grotto holding the remains of popes through the ages, immediately after a funeral scheduled to begin at 3 a. m. CDT. It will be attended by Prime Minister Paul Martin and other world leaders. Continued Please see POPE A 4 By Paul Samyn OTTAWA — Prime Minister Paul Martin yesterday blamed rogue Liberals who may have “ colluded” against his party and Canadians as he sought to limit the damage from explosive testimony at the federal sponsorship inquiry. With his fragile minority government hanging in the balance, Martin downplayed talk of an early election as the federal Liberal party called in the RCMP to investigate whether it was defrauded as part of the controversial sponsorship program. “ Canadians should have the facts and that is why I called for the Gomery commission,” Martin said in the Commons. “ That is why this government put that commission in place. It is precisely to have those facts and that is why there should not be an election until Justice Gomery has reported, because Canadians deserve to know the facts.” Secret testimony from the Gomery inquiry said to be highly damaging to the Liberals has put Parliament Hill on edge and sparked a political frenzy in Manitoba as talk of a snap election increases. A publication ban is temporarily in place involving supposedly damning testimony from advertising executive Jean Brault who is at the centre of the scandal, but reports have surfaced on a U. S. website. The Liberals yesterday were granted standing at the public inquiry so they could cross- examine Brault and others as party lawyer Doug Mitchell announced the Mounties were being called to determine if the Grits had been the “ target of fraud or other harmful acts by certain individuals.” Continued Please see SECRET A 2 P OPE J OHN P AUL II WORLD BIDS FAREWELL Inside .
