Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - July 5, 1982, Winnipeg, Manitoba Winnipeg Free 1982 Susan Jacks takes control New album presents more punch TORONTO CP Susan Jacks didnt give it a second thought when told not to bother dressing up for the photo assuming the record company would provide the But when the singer reported for her new albums photo she was handed a mans white shirt and told to look Obviously when youre sitting there in front of a camera and a man is taking pictures of you in just a white shirt and a somewhat provoca tive you feel a little bit she recalls with a Its a bit But when I saw it finally come out I thought This doesnt look at all like I It doesnt show anything not even so much as It stirs up the and I like There was more behind the alluring cover photo of Forever CBS than the accepted marketing tenet that sex Albeit tastefully the photo leaves no doubt that is past the age of Punchy effort Its reflected in the very presenta tion of the West Coast sing ers punchiest effort since she began recording more than a decade As Jacks talks about she bubbles with an enthusiasm usually reserved for the she is like having her first re I know I sound really awful but Im so proud of it I helped create this Im not just a little button that was She explains that ever since her earliest foray in recording the innocent in Vancouvers defunct Poppy Family her direct ion had been charted for first by Terry six years her senior and the guiding force be hind the Poppy later by others who continued to present her in the Pollyanna I let it happen and it didnt she Its just that all of a sudden when f didnt want to do it any when it wasnt valid to me any Canadian singer Susan Jacks likes the provocative nature of her new album cover more people producers werent interested in what else I had to She admits that her insecurity and lack of fight landed her some poor management a cost ly court dispute over the release of her second Family solo She won the but it left her I was to stick my neck out for fear of getting my head chopped In that frame of but knowing she didnt want to quit the she approached her former husband to produce her 1980 I could never look back on that experience with The Poppy Family which split up with the Jacks mar riage in 1973 and put it down because obviously we did everything that any one would want to do with a group we became an international But I found working with Terry on Ghosts was like going back in Later I analysed the album and I realized I hadnt gone I listened to it and this is a really to and my next thought Im sick of doing That was the turning She tied up with the Bruce whose Vancouver management firm handles Bryan Prism and and he in turn introduced her to Tom Lavin of the vibrant band Powder If Allen and Lavin succeeded in bringing out the punch in it wasnt at the expense of the natural beauty of her Gentle ballads are equally represented among the uptempo Medicine Show tackles a variety of health matters Executive producer Duncan McEwan calls The Medicine Show both a consumers guide and an owners which should help viewers make better decisions about heir own health care and the health care The debuting in its second summer season on the CBC network tonight Channel 2 at fills the time slot vacated by The Journals sum mer Produced out of CBC the show has been building over the last three years including two summers in Manitoba alone and is expected to make it into this falls network of life If it it will slide gracefully and a show ready when its time has The success of the consumer program Market Place bodes well for a show based on getting the best care for the old But in that analogy is limiting failing to get the best Cuisinart on the mar ket for your money we now not life and But neither is most of the Medicine more spontaneous description of the show is a celebration of And the show lives up to this claim in a refreshingly unsentimental The analogy is also The Medicine Show has a mandate with the potential to deal on an ongoing basis with issues like genetic the cost and structure of the medicare Like the CBC summer the subject is specific enough to cut across numerous fields and cogent ly tackle some of the most interesting questions facing us Style superceded In the first four of eight there is a rich variety of han with a crispness that allows infor mation to supersede At times the stylistic restraint is almost palpable you can feel the production geared up and capable of more than humming with unused Henry the current host and trained as a physician but never becoming instead an On Air Marilyn MacKinnon and communications with feet in both he brings an empathy that en larges the shows The show debuts tonight with a look at a state of the art emergency unit Baltimores Shock Trauma where the success rate is phe A motorcycle accident victim is followed from the helicopter landing on the hospital roof to the operating Syringe visual aid The whole episode is over very quickly and the viewer is left with a good deal of residual The pace changes and in the studio Comor using a syringe as a visual what shock These are helpful in reaffirming the shows purpose to help the viewer under stand health and medical The third program breaks a big medical story cy disease that recently erupted in New York Because the first victims were all only the gay press has divulged much information on the potentially fatal The story strikes a balance between the victims feelings and the public health issue the lack of sensationalism makes the story more The first four programs of the Medi cine Show dont shy away from operat ing room While Comor says there are plans to deemphasize surgery in the remaining following a blue baby an infant born with a heart defect through a sixhour with camera cuts to the anxious makes the whole pro much more All viewers who visit a postoperative patient for the first time
