CALLIE WETJEN The Williamsburg City Councils check to the Community Coalition for Rate Fairness is beginning to pay According to a press Alliant Iowa based Interstate Power and Light IP and has agreed with the Iowa Office of Consumer Advocate to file a rate rebalancing conduct a study on costs of service and to forgo an earlier goal to set up a rate fairness customer before July lawyer Bob Latham said the coalition absolutely had some thing to do with change of We objected to a sepa rate panel for the rate re which would have come after IP and Ls rate increase case with the IUB Iowa Utilities We believe there was no regulatory process we could see by establishing a customer It wasnt going to get things said Latham said protesting two separate rate cases for the rate increase and the rate rebal ancing would be a waste of time and money for both and by combining the two could make sure nothing falls between the He said the costs of service study is a start ing point to determine who should be pay ing To his Latham said IP and L has never done a study on costs of service be tween the separate Iowa the Northern including Williamsburg and surrounding pays up to 80 per cent more in energy costs than neighboring zones using the same power plants and representative Erik Miles said the four different pricing zones in Iowa reflect the individual rates previously set by utilities W e want our rates reduced and we think it could hap just not immedi Bob lawyer Union Iowa Iowa South ern and Interstate Power Company that merged or were acquired by IPL over the last several years The prices remained in effect after the mergers were Latham added if IP and L would charge the zones the same as the higher priced that difference alone could make a significant dent in recover ing million in past investment In response to IP and Ls agreement with the Office of Consumer Eliot president of Interstate Power and Customers have said they wanted this issue addressed quicker and more formally than a cus tomer Our customers have also expressed a sincere understanding of the need to recover past invest ments in order to make even more substantial investments in the fu This approach will allow customers the chance to voice their opinion in a sepa rate proceeding dedi solely to trie pur pose of allocating costs without jeopardizing future investments in Iowas energy In regard to the rebalancing said it would take four months to look at de termining how the allocation of costs would best meet the needs of all What does this mean for customers in the Northern Zone Latham What the IP and L news release didnt say was that they were ordered by the IUB to file examples of price equalization by June if they were au a price These examples could prove the per cent rate increase is not fair to the Northern and possibly lower the amount of rate increase for the Northern Latham Its very likely since were already paying the higher prices in the North ern we wont see any higher interim rates this We want our rates reduced and we think it could just not imme NpIC photo by Callie Wetjen Rural mail will not be delivered to standalone as shown in unless the door is left open or
