being recog Piano ISD dropped to academically acceptable in the Texas Education accountability ratings released last week James Ashby the districts director of assessment and accountability said the drop was related to Hispanic black and economically students scores on the science portion of the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills tests TEA has toughened its pass ing requirements on the TAKS each year for the past three years This year students had to get more answers right on the test Even though a student might have met the standard requirement last year several subgroups fell behind We compiled the individual score scales of the students and noticed that we have more students scoring better than last year Mr Ashby said However despite the stu dents increase in their scores that Contributing Writer When country singers croon about spaces and places they arent usually referring to a plot of land in the dead of the city But Collinwood Farm is nothing like the suburban houses and shop ping centers surrounding it in West Piano Located near the intersection of Spring Creek and park ways these 90 acres are the oldest working farm in the city and home to summer day camps yearround horseback riding lessons birthday parties and company meetings The farm has been in owner Susan Sowell Lymans family since her grandparents bought it in the early A few years ago she decided to make the farm her primary vocation I was teaching preschool at the time and I had been a horseback rider since I was 6 and I decided it would be wonderful to put together my love of horses and children she said I wanted to do this as a way of sharing the farm and the beauty of being outside Ms Lyman unknowingly hit an market business has doubled since last year and she fin ished her last summer camp last Friday Day camps include horseback riding tennis archery arts and crafts scavenger hunts and nature walks HORSES arent typical in Piano Collinwood Farm is an exception as Frosty the pony demonstrates We give them a chance to explore nature try things they wouldnt get to do otherwise she said Its very physical as opposed to sitting in front of the video games The property includes a historic farmhouse from 1861 game house bunk house swimming pool tennis court horse riding arena fishing lakes creeks a herd of Black Angus cows barns a barbecue grill zip line hammocks a swing set hay rides basketball pool and poker table horseshoes and badminton Its a little bit in the middle of the city You have no idea because you cant even see a house when youre here Ms Lyman said Ms Lyman with her three children run the summer camp and actually move from their Highland Park home to the farm five days a week during the summer The farm will offer horseback riding lessons from September
