office She clocked time at the campaign office for Congressman Steve Bartlett She was naturally drawn to the Republican Party I grew up in a conservative household and I believe that the Republican Party believes in empowering people she said I like the philosophy that we know the best way to spend our own money and whats best for our family From that humble beginning the West Piano resident has met some of the biggest names in the Republican Party as well as taken part in the political wave that trans formed Texas from a predominantly Democratic to Republican state After highschool of winning on President Bushs home turf But if the Massachusetts senator were to win Texas Mr Marek a lifelong Democrat and Piano resident is more than ready to cast a vote to send Mr Kerry to the spilled into Piano West High School where Bush 04 and John Kerry for President bumper stick ers have sprouted on the backs of automobiles and students in the hallways are arguing about the war in Iraq Student body president Jordan Herskowitz hopes that a recent school voter registra tion drive and an upcoming mock election ensure that students turn their passions toward the voting process A lot of kids are interested in voting in this election but are too young he said Next Mon during English classes students will go to designated voting areas and cast their ballots for President Bush or Senator Kerry Its very important to give a voice to the students and let them know what they have the power to do said Teresa Hyatt Student Congress sponsor at Piano West In September the Rock the Vote committee hosted a voter registration drive that registered 85 students Only 200 of the 1900 students at the school are eligible to vote Jordan said the war in Iraq has been a particular point of contention for students as they split into camps over whether the decision to go to war was right or not There are a lot of kids that support the war and a lot that dont I think that it goes to the heart of the country being split Our school reflects whats happening this elec tion As the election nears the Young Republicans and Young Democrats are using the daily school email to share the positions of their candidates The Young Republican Club has between 60 and 80 members while the Young Democrats which formed last year has grown to 30 members Brian Ghaemmaghami 17 senior and vice
