Heaven’s Gate mass suicide, March 26, 1997
This week in 1997, dozens of people died in a mass suicide north of San Diego in hopes of hitching a ride on a spaceship they believed to be traveling with the Hale-Bopp comet. An Associated Press article published March 28, 1997, in the Logansport Pharos-Tribune of Logansport, Ind., explored the group’s beliefs.
“Among the 39 New Age cult members who killed themselves en masse was a former college music teacher who as far back as 20 years ago was preaching a bizarre mix of Scripture and UFOs.”
