Weekly Nevada State Journal (Newspaper) - August 4, 1883, Reno, Nevada WEEKLY NEVADA STATE JOU Malice none with Charity to all and witli Firmness in the VOL 13 RENO WASHOE COUNTY NEVADA SATURDAY AUGUST 1 1883 NO 34 WEEKLY journal Saturday iteming C C TERMS OK One year by 30 Six mouths 2 25 Delivered by Carrier ill at 50 cents per month No paper forwarded by mail unless for u advance PHASE OF THE QUESTION Even the does not pear to havo the mischievous and scandalous Mormon question The Commission appointed under that law has established certain and lations fur the suppression of polygamy but a monogamous Legislature it pears must be elected in order to give work of the commission the of law or rather to the commission with the force lo carry out its own work The election of a Legislature will take place on the Gth of August next In ad- dition there will bj chosen probate judges Sheriffs and other local officers The question in which the country is interested is whether an mous Legislature can he secured The commission has declared that every person who has lived in amy at any time is still a polygamist and such will not be allowed to vote If this broad rule has not been adopted the would have made sure of success at the election by putting away all but one wife each aud setting up as monogamists The commission has prepared for the election by appointing judges in all o the 23 GOO in if fraud can be prevented the mists will carry the Legislature But there is danger from the fact that many citizens who are polygamists in ple are monogamists in practice having only one wife and these cannot be de- barred from voting Hence the which hangs over the issue of this tion upon which plainly hangs tha or the inadequacy of the Edmunds law Failure now will be practically a failure of all legislation thus far and some new plau will have to be adopted if the abomination is to be suppressed The law has been the sub- ject of adverse criticism from both sides The Mormons declared it to be a tion of their rights taking away the self-government to which they are en- titled and attacking their religion and also that the construction put upon and enforced by the commission is im- proper and unwarranted On the other hand the opponents of Mormonism de- clare the law not stringent enough aud predict its failure grounding their ion upon their knowledge of the power of the polygamous church the firm foothold it haa gained and the ties that lie in the way of its extinction The coming election will determine wheather they are correct or otherwise in their estimates A victory for the now will make a failure of the severest law that could be applied by peaceable means aud cause the of- fenders to show a more front than ever In the meantime the Mormon people are increasing more rapidly thau those of any other territory State or city iu the United States Their missionaries were never before so numerous active aud successful Almost weekly we hear of a new cargo of emigrants from Eu- rope landing at Castle Garden and bound for Utah having become disciples of the church of latter day saints The great majority of these are women de- stined to become plural wives of the beastly saints who divide the revenues of the church and their humble ants They are from the peasantry of Europe ignorant coarse and tive bat they perform the menial labor of the houses and fields and contribute to the national increase of population which is of course rapid The ment sends back to Europe with almost every ship a few pers that have been thrust by their friends or the home government upon American charity but it has not yet ventured to interfere with this most de- graded class of emigrants who are brought here for a purpose in plain lation of our laws It is time for the government to at least lay its hands on those who come here with the tion of practicing polygamy The doom of polygamy will probably be like that of slavery It is so remote from the centers of civilization that its enormity does not directly offend and hence it is allowed to grow bold and defiant strengthening itself continually in its chosen stronghold and spreading ont rapidly to territories In Idaho it has already elected several members to the Legislature and its ad- herents are settling in large numbers south of Utah When the cancer has like slavery so large as to threaten the national life then tie ple will arise and cut it out with the sword If this were to be done now the task would be easy but it will be de- layed till the power of resistance be- sufficient to involve a costly and bloody war ELECTIONS The Washington Star gives a list of seven Northern States holding elections this Fall It is as setts Xew York New Jersey vania Ohio Iowa and Minnesota With the exception of New Jersey all these States were carried by the Republicans in the last Presidential election Now all of them are regarded as doubtful though the Republicans feel reasonably sure of Minnesota and Iowa With the exception of New York and vania all the States named Governors and State officers In it is already evident that Gov Butler will again be the Democratic candidate In Ohio and Iowa are to be chosen that will have to elect a United States Senator each In Pennsylvania only two minor State officers will be elected while in New York the most important State officers below the Governor and are to be chosen In Iowa tha liquor question has been made the main issue of the canvass aud it is this thai throws what uncertainty there ex- ists over the result The party has planted itself upon an lute prohibitory platform It is pledged in the event of its success to fir firmly into the State tion This has alienated the mass of the German voters who have in past years been one of the elements of strength in the State It has weakened the parly tao River tier ot counties where the principal browing and distilling ness of the State is located But it ia claimed that this loss will in a great measure be compensated for by re- from Temperance Democrats The Irish temperance organizations in Iowa number many thousands of voters who are principally Democrats It is said that these organizations sympathize so strongly with the prohibition movement that as it has been made a positive issue they will vote the can ticket in order to assure its success The Democrat organs and leaders deny that there is any defection from their party on account of the liquor question and base their hopes of victory upon the expectation of getting the German vote and he aid aud support of ers distillers and all others interested in the liquor business In Minnesota the Prohibitionists are already in the field with a full State ticket and a form condemning both the old parties The Democrats claim that this will draw its support almost en- tirely from the Republicans but even concede that it is uot likely to weaken that party enough to cost it the State It is true that there are factional ences within the Republican party of Minnesota that have evidently impaired its organization but with the large it has the Democratic chance can scarcely be considered more than a possibility TELLER His Opinion of the Hill's Grants CHICAGO July M er Secretary of the Interior stopped ver in Chicago Wednesday on his way o Colorado He said that outside of Apaches there was no among the Indians about and locations The em of how to deal with the red man solution and it was ound in education aud following pursuits The day had gone y when the proposition to turn the over to the guidance of the rmy could be- seriously entertained peaking of Senator Hill's attack on iin through the newspapers a short me ago the Secretary said the Senator ew into a passion unnecessarily and mt if he decided to become a for the United States he id uot think he would be injured in estimation of the people of Colorado y anything Senator Hill might say here was and to grim The city grows upon our view through its purlieus the north shore are not beautiful Here are outskirts offal dumps and an occasional factory Rounding Telegraph Hill the city proper comes in view Many ships are anchored in tha stream aud a forest of masts lines the wharves for a mile or more The bay is certainly beautiful It compares strangely now with that day a third of a century ago when silence reigned over Yerba Buena and the sandhills were as desolate as if transplanted from Sahara Time aud labor and great riches have transformed the scene and here one of the greatest miracles ever born of human effort and the lapse of years In all the ages of history the cycles of time have never written such a chapter of wonder as that one that changes the silences of Yerba Buena oi old to the noisy clamor of the San cisco of to day Portland Or Corr N Y Times TUB JACK POT How Mrs opened it with ami nun her Checkers Now my said dyke shuffling the cards and dividing the checkers into two even piles pose we play a game of poker Do you know how to play I guess replied Mrs dyke hitching up her chair the top of the table with a towel cards do you Let me fluttered Mrs Let's ifte I believe I'll take Better take a snorted Mr eyeing her wrathfully Perhaps you'd like half a Don't you know you can't draw but If you've got any bad cards throw em away and I'll give you more for em If vour cards are all good you can stand pat Do yon want to stand I guess sighed Mra dyke helplessly If I stand pat do I play the eight or the Yon don't play replied Mr helping himself to five cards and drawing a couple of kings Now it's my bet I bet two what do yon Then I bet answered Mrs brightening up as she be- gan to see her way clear I bet a a queen and an and she laid them down with That calls my said Mr gleefully only you don't bet you cards you bet your checkers Put iu two checkers and show your cards Mrs shoved her ers into the middle of the table aud laid down three eights aud a pair of queens you roared Mr recognizing his defeat ye want to keep talking about the three of eights and the two of Why didn't ye tell you had a full You gave em to returned Mrs dolefully I only had these five What does it It makes a jack growled Mr a chance for self iu his wife's utter ignorance of the game Now we've each got to put in one checker just because yon played iu that way I'm sorry dear cooed Mrs endyke rather pleased with the idea of getting out of the scrape at any expense And yet I might have known it would have made a jack pot if I had stopped to When you stop to think yon only a stick of chewing-gum and a tiap to be a female Do yon know what a jack pot Got some kind of a notion that it has three lugs and is used to cook mush iu haven't Well it isn't aud it isn't to sit there aud grin at It takes a pair of jacks or something as good as them to open it Now take these cards and tell me whether you open it or Mrs examined her cards critically What have you demanded Mr His wife laid down four aces and a jack Mr glanced at tho hand and then at his own cards His ace was only the joker which he uad for- gotten to remove from the pack Which inquired Mrs watching the gathering storm with some trepidation Nothing opens yelled Mr dashing his cards to the floor With your way of playing it it would take a to open ye think it was with a night Got an idea that it had hinges haven't ye and opens est when it has nothing to say like your Must I bet my last cent Altered Mrs profoundly impressed with tha idea that the game going on I've got four dol ars but I want one for wiggin Shall I bet tha other Bet howled Mr who like a great many men regarded the idea of his wife beating him at any thing as intolerably blasphemous we Bring forth the speculative three dollars and hazard it on the four triumphant and the conclusion of Mr speech flew out of him too fast for perfect enunciation I don't murmured Mrs as she wound the clock and stood scratching her nose with the key he told four aces were as good as his jack pot and whon I opened it he said I was wrong time I'll put them in my pocket and he can play away at that jack pot until he's bald before I'll help him get it And with this riotous determination Mrs crawled into bed am dreamed that she had got caught in i jack pot with a spring lock to it ant couldn't get out because she had lef the four aces in the pocket of her plum colored Magazine COLO HA OO Progress umt Mining A Fine Region Opened Enterprise The southern terminus of the Carson and Colorado Railroad is now at iy Station on lake about 300 was stated that he flag pole which Adams sed people of Candelaria during the had at last been shipped to ts destination The Appeal at tha time ver willing to do full justice to any man who keeps his promise made au notice of tbe shipment This ave the low papers who profess to airo Mr Adams an opportunity of making somewhat of a stir over this natter as they culled attention to the act that Adams was keeping his word otter than his detractors Now tho acts of the case are that Gov Adams las not sent any flag pole to or elsewhere The report that he id so is incorrect and must have in some ill-advised friend of the who wanted to silence criticism on the subject for the ime being Tho freight records ol he V T R R fail to how that any flag pole of any description has passed over the oad since the that Jewett Adams assured the confiding people of that he intended to present hern with a new liberty pole Thus he still stands before tho public as a of his word aud the people of will look in vain for the pole No man holding the position oi of a State can afford to break his word Such a lowers his status as a gentleman aud brings con- empt the Gubernatorial office A promise made in tho heat of a cal campaign is just as binding as tne made at any other place or at any other ime We have no doubt that the ernor will redeem his word as a matter of policy at least since the press of the Slate has agitated the matter so fully And when tho good people of iaria get the flag pole they should in scribo upon Presented to the town of Candelaria by the Press of Nevada If the pole is not in place in one yeai from the date of the Adams promise the Nevada Press Association shouli subscribe a sufficient sum to buy the pole ARTESIAN WELLS Wny in Get a Supply oi or There is complaint of a At Salt Lake the same thing has In regard to what has been one near the place tho Tribute of a date says Since Mr demonstrated that e purest water could be obtained by inking artesian wells across the the settlers re now beginning to look upon tins as aeir strongest and best The day s not distant when all the lund on ither side of thu river will be brought ader a high state of cultivation by of these wells The river referred to is doubtless the therefore the situation at Reno Carson would not be very different loth places being in valleys surrounded iy high hills and mountains John of Mill Secretary of State John P Jones of Nevada for Secretary of the Treasury and George 0 Gorham for Secretary of the Navy But dent Arthur already has a something which the author of thi suggestion seems to have and moreover with is perfectly satisfie ng quantity At the Columbus salt in this well was sunk through a hardpan o a sufficient depth lo show that below t lay pure fresh water Battle ain Nevada is full of artesian wells aud in a year or two it is probable that same may be said of Genoa Hawthorne aud other towns The Hawthorne Bulletin says Public opinion is gaining strength against the further maintenance of the Walker River Reservation The seldom live upon it aud use it so little that it is practically abandoned by all but the Government employes The Pyramid Lake fisheries are better for tbo Indians as there are no seasons when fish can not be caught and men can Indians catching enough to supply them ing in Walker Lake is intermittent and while very valuable under white the next The Pyramid vation is large enough for all purposes is the favorite and is the home of the Indians This is really useless but if would immediately become valuable for many purposes Indians are making working for the whites The surn displayed on their blankets when they are gambling is sufficient evidence of this They make nothing scarcely from the luka as they do uot use it When they
