Magazines Be Made to Pay the Cost of Mailing Washington Dec space of twelve months a reduction has been made in the deficit ot the department oj according to the Postmaster General Prank H Hitchcock made public today f While a year ago the fiscal records postal service disclosed a de the largest in the History of the country the excess over receipts for the year ended June last amounted to only In commenting upon this reduction Postmaster Gen eral Hitchcock says In his report Extension of Service H is most gratifying to report that this unprecedented reduction has been made without any curtailment of postal faculties On the contrary the services has been largely extend ed The policy of the present admin has been to wipe put loss es by increasing the postal business along profitable lines and while thus enlarging the departments income to reduce as far as possible therate of expenditure by cutting out wasteful processes by simplifying and render Ing more effective the methods of handling postal business and by rais ing to the highest possible standard the efficiency of officers and em ployes The more quickly niall matter can be handled the less expensive Is the process The department accordingly has devoted itself with great earnest ness to the work of increasing the ef of the mall service consider ing this the surest method of making the postal establishment ing Tho de livery routes traversing altogether 12235 miles were Instituted Nearly 8600 new employes of various class es were placed upon the rolls of the department whose aggregate salar ies were more than remarkably strong and thrilling ser mon by Evangelist W A Sunday the vast audience of 7500 people beheld the spectacle of many arising from all parts of the building at once and hur down the sawdust aisles to take the evangelist by the hand and ac knowledge the Christ as their person al savior Without waiting for any personal worker to speak to them scores accepted the invitation and for several moments in any direction one might look he could see groups and couples or single individuals hurrying to the front On many cheeks were tears of repentance but for the most part tho fares were calm
