the dread ed corn borer when it reaches Iowa is emphasized by William Crownover well known Belgian and proprietor of Paramount stock farm two miles north of Hudson This is a new point and probably will awaken much discussion We are greatly concerned over the advancement of the corn borer and we cannot avoid It says Crown over in his brief for the pheasant The borer is sure to come where the tall corn grows The government appropriated to fight it and the report is now that where the government has spent a lot of money for machinery and labor the move has only propagated the pest still farther Favors Distribution of Birds The pheasant is going to be the best com borer fighter we can get and farmers will find it profitable to protect and assist in the the birds If the game de has any intention of ren dering the state a service it will ar range for the distribution of ants over all of Iowa and thus sup ply every county with corn borer fighters Now only a few counties in northeastern Iowa are favored with these beneficial birds I admire the stand of the Orange township people They have always been noted for their righteousness and sane thinking Every county would do well to follow their precepts in urging protection of the pheasant Opposes Slaughter I note from your columns that these game exterminators who I presume call themselves Ike Waltons are pressing petitions among land owners of Black Hawk county for permission again to slaughter the ringneck pheasant In the first place the ruling of the state game department permit ting the taking of 45 birds Is pre Last year these birds were shot promiscuously on the public highways and in the fields regard less of sex The result is that we have fewer birds The cold wet weather of the spring reduced the hatch and I have noticed few flocks that are about the size of the quail and are still in the care of the mother birds It would be crim inal to destroy the lives of the parent birds Says Duvall Went
