Waterloo Evening Courier (Newspaper) - February 10, 1915, Waterloo, Iowa Paper of Sections in Waterloo AND WATERLOO DAILY REPORTER FORECAST Chicago Feb Fair to night and probably Thursday wmm cr cast and portion tonight WATERLOO IOWA WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 10 1915 PRICE THREE CENTO PET D Desperate HandtoHand Attacks Mark Battles in the Carpa thian Mountains RUSSIANS CLAIM TO HAVE BEEN VICTORS Czars Officers State That Thou sands of the German Dead Were Left on Battlefields Feb of the desperate fighting in the Carpathian mountains with ferocious bayonet charges described as without pre cedent in history reached Petrograd today According to these reports repeat ed German attacks were finally re pulsed by the Russians and the Ger man dead lay In great numbers in front of the Russian positions The scene of the fighting was 30 miles south of Sanok in Galicia It is claimed by the Rus sian staff that the Hungarian forces in the Carpathians had been aug by 300000 Germans and that German officers are now definitely directing the Carpathian movement PROBABLE GERMAN PLAN The German plan insofar as it can be observed here now seems to be to abandon gradually their aggres sive on the Bzura and in the Vistula region and to transfer their troops to points where there is greater oppor of piercing the Russian de fensive The fighting in the Car would appear to be part o this procedure Concentrating their forces the night of Feb 7 the Germans earl the following morning began wha doubtless rapidly developed into one of the fiercest attacks in the ian campaign With their first line almost annihilated Germans pushed forward their second line un der the support of heavy artillery and were successful in gaining strategic elevation But from this position they were almost immedi ately by a Russian bayo net charge Attack and counter at tacks followed in rapid succession and towards evening the Germans in great numbers seemed to be in per manent possession of the heights DESPERATE FIGHTING Then a general counter attack the Russians resulted in two hours of hard handtohand fighting which left the snow clad hillsides strewn dead After a most stubborn resistance the German regiments finally driven out A Russian officer claims personally to have counted upwards of 1000 German dead before Russian positions on this hill He described this engage ment as typical of battles which are British Steamer Unfurls U S Flag in Irish Sea ANOTHER BRITISH LINER FLIES AMERICAN FLAG New York Feb gers on the Cunard line British steamer which arrived here today from England said that the steamer flew the Ameri can flag for nearly 24 hours on Jan 31 while passing thru the Irish sea The stars and stripes they said were hoisted on Sunday about an hour after the left Liverpool and not hauled own until early Monday morn ing INCIDENT VOUCHED FOR New York Feb was to sail from Liverpool Saturday Jan 30 but did not depart until the next morning Passengers heard that the reason for the delay was that a German submarine was hovering in the vicinity The Amer ican flag was raised they said short ly after the cleared the Mercey The explanation which the passen gers said they received from some of the under officers was that the American flag had been raised for the purpose of protecting Amer ican citizens among the 240 passen gers H T Strong of this city and James Ford of Lynn Mass were two of the passengers who said they would vouch over their names that the American flag was carried by the ship They said it was not until had cleared the Irish sea that it was hauled down Capt Thos Taylor commander of the refused to discuss the matter saying he waa under orders from the British admiralty not to talk AGENT IN DENIAL Chas P Sumner general agent of the line in this city denied today that the had flown the Amer ican flag except at her foremast which he explained is customary on all ships to indicate the country to which they are bound Both Ford and Strong as well as other passen gers insisted however that the flag was flying aft indicating the nation of the vessel At no time was the American flag raised at the stern of the said Mr Sumner The American flag was raised to the foremast head upon leaving Liverpool to indicate that the was sailing for an American port with American passen gers and American mail The Amer ican flag remained at the foremast head all the way across the ocean FURTHER WARNING Washington D C Feb the German am delivered to the state de today a copy of the memor andum of the German the number of British troops in the field now as close to 500000 with the tation that the army of a million which Lord Kitchener predicted would be in service soon was likely to be In France by spring London Feb 10 p The eastern battle front completely overshadows the western fighting line today as the center of interest in the military operations The Teutonic allies evidently are making desperate efforts tb especially in the region of Galicia to the south of and Lemberg where at tempts have been made to gain posi tions by sheer weight of numbers The general offensive movement of the forces along the Carpathian mountains has been suc at the eastern end of the range where the Russians are re treating into but London military experts are of the opinion that the Austrians must force ahead a long way in this direction before they can hope to affect the general Russian position The vital point is Dukla pass where a short advance by the Bus sians would compel the Austrians to look anxiously tions At present the battle in the region of Dukla pass has all the aspects of a draw The most sanguinary fighting ac cording to Russian reports took place in the Carpathian where the Germans attempted to cross Tuk holka pass The Teutons attacked in massed formation several ranks deep and gained several heights occupied by the Russians only to be forced back by desperate counter attacks
