during his absence on a trip to Boston It was edly brief but definite New York Feb 24 tlemen I deeply appreciate your letter and I realize to the full the heavy responsibility it puts upon me expressing is it does the carefully considered convictions of the men elected by popular vote to stand as the heads of government In their sev eral states I absolutely agree with you that this matter is not one to lie decided with any reference to the personal preferences or in of any man but purely from the standpoint of the inter Continued on page 3 CUMMINS OFFERS NEW TRUST Measure Presented by lowan Embodies Trust Platform of Iowa Candidate For President Would Limit Size of Corporations Not to Interfere With Economy But to Give Competition a Chance Washington Feb trust platform of Senator Cummins of Iowa candidate for the republican nomina tion for president Is embodied in a which Mr Cummins introduced to day designed to strengthen greatly the governments antitrust powers The measure would provide what it Is claimed would bo the first authority to limit the size of corporations and to guard against unfair or ruinous com petition through protected undersell ing It would put into which I have al ways endeavored and always endeavor to reduce to Ac tion in the genuine rule of the people therefore I hope that M far M possible the peo ple may be given the chance through direct primaries to press their preference an to ahall be the nominee of the re publican presidential convention Very truly yours Addressed to Governors The letter is addressed to The Hon William E governor of West Virginia Charles ton W Va The Hon Chester H governor of the state of Nebraska Lincoln Neb The Hon Robert P Bass or of the state of New Hampshire Concord N H The Hon Joseph M Carey gov ernor of the state of Wyoming Chey enne Wyo The Hon Charlen gov ernor of the state of Michigan Lans ing Mich The Hon W R Stubba governor of the state of Kansas Topeka Kan The Hon Herbert 8 Hadley gov ernor of the of Missouri Jeffer son City Mo The above named governors assem bled at Chicago two weeks ago and drafted a letter to Colonel Roosevelt asserting there was a popular de mand for him to be president again and urging him to declare himself as to whether he would accept the re publican nomination if it came to him unsolicited and unsought For two weeks Colonel Roosevelt considered the letter Indicating plainly that he had no intention of making a hasty reply Offers if Truth of Statements Made by Little Men With Axes of Their Own to Grind Are Verified William Galloway offers in gold onehalf payable to the Presbyterian Hospital and onehalf pay able to the Franciscan Hospital if anybody can prove that the statement which was made in the Cedar Falls Record Saturday February 24 1912 is true wherein it says that the speaker of the evening showed con how Galloway was owned and controlled by the catalog houses mentioned This statement is absolutely untrue I believe it Is a deliberate malicious downright lie concocted for the purpose of deceiving the people It hae no foundation whatever and any man who will produce evidence that our concern is owned or controlled by any catalog house on the face of the earth is hereby asked to produce the evidence or proof and when same Is produced and presented to our attorneys J E Williams Edwards Longley and B F Swisher the money will be forthcoming for the purpose above mentioned payable In gold The big bon fire at Cedar Falls the other evening biggest joke of the season The other day one of Black Hawk Countys wealthiest most progressive and uptodate farmers residing near Cedar Falls called at the Agricultural Club to see me and was apparently all worked up over the discrimination against our company at the Cedar Falls Short Course I him to tell me what it was all about and he said Galloway the International Harvester Co are trying to run that Short Course and the entire town of Cedar Falls but half the farmers of the community would not attend for that very reason It amused me and we both laughed at the situation I forgot all about it until I read the Waterloo evening papers and glanced at the glaring head lines which said Big Catalog Fire at Cedar Falls I glanced tiie head lines hurriedly and then down the columns because at first glance I thought Cedar Falls had gone up In smoke but on closer investigation found the fire was incendiary and was apparently started by a local representative of a Trust not a Cedar Falls institution at all This amused me again I have been in Black Hawk County for more than ten seen some funny things in that time but this is certainly the hugest joke that I have ever heard about since 1 have lived In the County but when one of my employes who lives In Cedar Falls came into my office this morning and handed me a clipping from the Cedar Falls Record in which they made the statement that a man by the name of Mr Boreman showed conclusively how Galloway was owned and controlled by catalog houses it passed far be yond a joke because this statement was a malicious deliberate downright lie evidently concocted for the pur pose of deceit because no catalog house on earth has anything to say whatever about the great Galloway policy and business tactics They do not own or control us in any way manner shape or form and the man who made statement and the paper that made that statement are either willfully ignorant or are malicious liars in either case dangerous people to do business with In the Cedar Falls Record item they made mention of how large catalog houses controlled every mail or der house and how they forced them out of business This is tommyrot Its bunk How does it come that our concern started in Black Hawk County only a few years ago with nothing and today have assets that run up Into the millions and doing business that also runs up into the millions I will tell you how It happened It happened by first finding out the true trade conditions then starting In to manufacture and sell goods on right principles Any man in Iowa can do the same if he will get busy use printers ink and advertise judiciously even if he were located out at Wilson Junction The great trouble is that Galloway is tramping on the toes of the Trust which hae been having its own way and bleeding the people of this country for years and they cant stand the pressure They know we are getting the confidence and trade of thousands upon thousands of farmers by our square dealing and our high quality of goods and our low prices and their policy according to this a tide appearing the other night is to get our wishbone at any cost Now as a matter of fact two eye witnesses told me this morning the total number of catalogs burned could be put in two bushel baskets and that they saw themselves in the bunch of waste basket junk that went into the flames four or five Saturday Evening Posts They also said the catalogs that were burned were out of date 1910 and 1911 books and that there were some farmers there who said if there was any 1912 catalogs they wanted them but they found none Murphy also said in his speech immediately following the fire Why bless you the catalog house dont need your help in advertising their business They have got beyond the point where you can help advertise them They are the biggest and most persistent advertisers in the whole world and while you have been sit ting idly by they have spread their advertisements throughout the land in various insidious ways He also said These concerns have not gained much of a foothold in the city and it is encouraging to know that the danger has been realized early and that measures win be taken to avoid it Mr Murphy evidently believes in his own preaching for this event has given the catalog houses the big gest advertising they have had in the county for years and I will wager that in two months the city of Cedar Falls and Black Hawk County will have more mail order catalogs in it than It ever had before in all of its history Mark what I tell you the sensible business thinking people of Cedar Falls had nothing to do what ever with this boys bonfire because thats all it was Just kids play and it will go down into history as kids play because from reports that we have received from fanners with reference to the Short Course etc the local octopus is trying to run the town under the guise of the Commercial club The article went on and stated that a genuine spirit of patriotism civic loyalty and pride was awakened in the people of the city All this by the simple burning of two bushel of out of date catalogues and about five Saturday Evening Posts according to the statement made by eye witnesses The genuine spirit of patriotism is a Joke A man would be a bird of a patriot to tlo anything that would interfere with the personal liberty of his citizens Whats all this noise about anyhow Hasnt a man a right to send for a catalog in this free country look it over and buy what he wants Dont the very face of the tactics attempted the other day In Cedar Falls show that the dealers and asso are trying to organize so they can put out of business the safety valve that is a necessity in commer because thats exactly what the catalog house is It is one of the things that has to be It is here and always be here Its a good deal like David Harum said about the dog He said A dog had to have fleas to keep him from forgetting that he was a dog Its the same way with business They have to have the catalog house for a safety valve against high prices or prices would go up so high that the boiler would bust But the little mail orl fellow with his little 5 per cent of the total business done comes In as a necessity and open goes the safety alve The prices are checked up controlled and governed As far as petting business is concerned that is largely up to the merchant himself I started In business in a town of fifty inhabitants The man I worked for in that town dil a business for fifteen miles around Why Just because he told tho people about what he had and made special bargains You might as well try to stop the flow of Niagara Falls as to keep the people back when there is a bargain sale on What the local octopus and the representative of the Iowa Retail Dealers association want to do is to fix the prices so that they can have their own way They failed as was evidenced by the big crowd that didnt come out in Cedar Falls Every manufacturer merchant or jobber In the States has an show if he only has brains vim and energy enough to go after his share push and advertise If he cant do that he had better go out of business and join the popular movement of hack to the soil Maybe some of the progressive farmers of Black Hawk county will give him a job as hired hand ami later on after he has learned how to farm right because It Is the best business in the world he can own and run a farm nnd thon watch him send for a catalog Cedar Falls fair one believe me look out for the octopus and the other fellows who were behind the cur tain in this fire the other day WM GALLOWAY lLK IS Wash Feb double was revealed today when the bodies of Mrs W Brown aged 24 and John Wilson wore found on the country road near a inert beyond the city limits both having boon clubbed to The husband of the dead wom an Haid his wife and Wilson had gone to
