commerce com mission for higher freight rates proved a boomerang when it fell into the hands of the state board of tion which has the duty of fixing the values of some of the railroads for taxing purposes As the result of statements made to the commission during its rate hearing in Chicago in September by W A Gardner president of the Chi cago and Northwestern and F E Ward general manager of the Bur lington the state board on added a mile to the valuation of each of the two roads for main line tracks although the railroads deny there was any foundation for the in the testimony The state
