Wheeler had defrauded Schaller of certain taxes due the latter when he was treasurer of this county He is also represented as accusing Mr Wheeler of failing to support Senator Hutchison when the latter was the Republican candidate for governor two years ago Every man in Sac county knows that there is no truth in the tax story The Chronicle published the facts in the case nearly three months ago and furnished convincing proof that there was no foundation for the published by the Democratic press Mr Wheelers active support of Sen ator Hutchison is a matter of record He published an address vouching for Hutchisons standing on the railroad question was frequently consulted by the candidate and did everything in his power to bring about Hutchisons election The light vote in Mr Wheelers home was due to a split on the Republican county ticket an Inde pendent ticket being in the field To settle the matter we append a statement written and signed by Mr Wheeler which we trust will be given general circulation by the Republican press It is a conclusive refutation of the charges made in the faked inter view with Schaller ODEBOLT Iowa Oct 12 1891 enclose Mr Schallers denial of the Chicago Herald interview which is as follows Whereas the Chicago Herald has published an alleged interview between poker over an old blacksmith shop and taken before a Cedar Rapids justice and lined The most of them were students of Cornell college and promi nent business men Reid of Marsh allt own awoke in the middle of the night and thought he saw a burglar in his room He grabbed his revolver of Generals Mitro and Roca as candi dates for the presidency of tho republic The general opinion seems to be that tho effects of these withdrawals will be far reaching and momentous in the history of tho republic Following closely upon those retirements was the announcement that Ministers Costa and had resigned from the cabinet This action it would seem is to be followed by further withdrawals from tho cab inet Of course these desertions of the administration has added to tho excitement There is so much public discontent that it luib given rise to many ugly rumors Some of these assert that tho Argentine Re public is already entering upon period of rebellion The temper of tho populace is such that a riot may break forth at any moment The government however is well aware of the dung and Window Caps and Orn amental Iron Work W 4th St 342 Cm The Democratic orators are fond of saying this year that the McKinley law has not increased the wages of the workingmen They ask to be inform ed what reason the mechanics and la borers have to favor a measure that does not cause employers to pay any more for their services This is hardly a fair way of stating the case but the question can be answered nevertheless in such a manner as to vindicate the law and prove that it deserves the sup port of those who labor for wages in every branch of industry It is a wel known fact that all the necessaries o life are cheaper this year than they were last year In the case of some of for de is marked and unprecedented The general list of prices is materially ower and the expense of living is les sened of course to that extent This signifies that the purchasing power of wages has been increased The labor er is getting more than he because the amount which he receives will buy more of the things that he wants It is easy to understand that this is in effect an increase of wages Every man employed in the different avenues of production is doing better than he did last year and the source of this improvement is the McKinley law which has reduced the cost of living about 10 per cent There has not been a reduction of wages in any branch of industry tho McKinley law was enacted All classes of workingmen are being paid as many dollars per week or month as they were before the pas sage of that act and those dollars wil procure 10 per cent more of any o the articles of common consumption somo other city at much less expense and with much more satisfactory results I could sim ply have gono to work and taken that Broad Tay road as it onco was and I could have put n a block a night of my system I could havo changed the road all over and you would never havo known anything about it He has yet a greater schema on foot for transporting passengers over long distance railways He is full of this and said to The World attache I am also building a largo electrical tive several hundred horse power and havo devised a system of conduction without trolley for a big railroad for Henry Villard A small section has been laid An electrical tive is much more economical than a steam one A steam locomotive is not economical by reason of the Conditions it has to work under That is tho trouble with it whereas tako one of these triple expansion engines on a solid foundation with nil tho economical appli ances and tho you can get power on a train in motion for onethird the cost that yon can do it direct with a steam locomotive Then you havo every advantage in an electric locomotive Instead of running a train of sis coaches every two hours split It up Make it two coaches and run It of toner They arc Koing to put this locomotive on somo road in Chicago and Mil waukee I think I am going to take tho currents from stations twenty miles apart I was tho first man In tho United States yon know to build an electric railroad I bullions three miles long at Park in I took Mr over tho road at tho rato of forty miles an hour We ran so fast that ho wanted to walk back My idea then was to put tho system on largo steam roads hut I was n oo far ahead of tho times They aro y going to corao to it now however I can tako tho Pennsylvania railroad for in stance between Jersey City and Philadelphia and I can begin by putting one electric train on it and they can go on running steam too and gradually replace steam by electricity without any trouble nt all You can go any speed you want to with electric trains It Is only limited by tho limit of tho cohesion of tho steel There aro no other limitations to elec tric as there aro to steam locomotives Many Buildings ami De in Western
