Those were a few of the words family friends and fellow soldiers used Sunday to describe Seth Garceau Garceau 22 died March 4 from injuries sustained in a roadside bomb explosion last month in Iraq More than 700 people attended a Sunday memorial service in the Oelwein High School gymnasium which was decorated on both ends of the basketball court with bouquets easels supporting photograph montages and tables filled with Garceau's military medals and commendations His body was buried Sunday in Woodlawn Cemetery There can be no triumph without the Rev Leo said to begin the service Friends recalled Garceau's great smile and sense of humor He also had an unrelenting dedication to whatever it was he was doing they said Dominic Grass 29 of Dubuque served in the Guard with Garceau and named his son after him Grass praised his friend during Sunday's service Seth made me a better soldier man friend and Grass said As I call out to my son each day I will be reminded of a truly great friend Losing Seth a large part of my life from me Garceau graduated from Oelwein High School in 2001 His passion for working with heavy equipment led him to pursue the military as a way to gain training and experience He joined the Iowa National Engineer Company out of Davenport as a construction equipment operator and combat engineer In December he was deployed to Kuwait with the Engineer Battalion His unit was dispatched in January to Iraq where it helped identify and reduce minefields repair bridges and serve as convoy escorts It was during a convoy mission that Garceau's Humvee was Northern Iowa Iowa and Iowa State men's basketball programs were invited to the NCAA Tournament in the same season This date will go down as one of the greatest days for basketball in the state of UNI
