paints a clear picture of how ently parents deal with their sons and daughters Imagine he said if a little girl walked out of her parents bedroom wearing her father's clothes tie shoes hat Most parents would con- sider the sight irresistibly cute and probably take photographs Kindlon pointed out But consider if a young boy did the same thing but this time dressed in his mother's clothes assessment that the reaction from most parents would probably be a tle less than enthusiastic struck a nerve The example was meant to trate how boys are trained to be tough and stoic while girls are allowed to keep their emotional spouts open The result is young boys who are helpless when it comes to dealing with emotions a frightening prospect for society and the kids themselves that often results in violence he said Boys get to the point where they're overwhelmed by emotion and they can't handle he said And they only have one outlet He has recently a bestseller titled Raising the Emotional Life of Boys Kindlon holds joint assistant in the psychiatry ment of the Harvard Medical School and the department of maternal and child health care at the Harvard School of Public Health The specter of recent school shootings in Littleton Colo ers Ga and other cities throughout the country was a backdrop to lon's speech He said teachers and Boys get to the point where they're overwhelmed by emotion and they can't handle it Dan Kindlon studies why boys commit violent acts parents should use the focus now being placed on stemming school violence as an opportunity to ment change He said he has seen boys who have begun to travel the path that led the two shooters at Columbine High to violence But in sessions where the boys were taught to dis- sect their emotions and explain how they felt they became comfortable with society again he said Kindlon also said studies into why boys commit violence should be focused more on their socialization than their biological makeup He ed a study that showed boys who achieve the most in school often have higher levels of testosterone a mone responsible for development of male secondary sex characteristics than those who are often in trouble He also said the focus should be on socialization because that's the area that can be changed Pooches nationwide put best paws forward ST LOUIS When you ask your dog to perform a play basketball She's hailed by USA Today Parade Magazine and other sports publications as one of the best but there are some who say She isn't that good and She's overrated She's been booed in gyms harassed slurs and attacked by people she doesn't know Remarkably Nina shines on She just shrugs and says Oh that always happens when I play says Felicia She puts up with a lot and she doesn't take those people seriously It hasn't always been so for Nina As a little girl she lived in her shadow and her parents feared she come out from behind it The young woman who emerged was one who balanced talent with a humble nature I have to give a lot of credit to Tony James says He's a good coach and he taught her too about how to talk to people and how to talk to the media She's been with him since He prepared us too and told us not everyone would like her and we would have to deal with a lot of lies and I'm glad he did that for her because I wouldn't have been able to If people said the kind of stuff about me they say about her I wouldn't have handled it as well as she has Bev says He took the stress from her like the stress of getting into shape She didn't have to ry about that because she knew he would worry about it for her He stayed on her and worked her and she needed that James perhaps Nina's greatest task master is quick to list what she needs to work on But he also knows how talented she is I just don't understand how people have the nerve to say she's not the best Does she have to go to the moon and find someone to play her there? Who can I find for my daughter to play against that will finally prove to these people she is the James respects high school letes Watching adults talk trash about Nina and her peers has left him disgusted with their ty They're only kids dealing with all this pressure and adults run them into the ground They should know better if you don't have something nice to say you don't say it at all Going Women's National Basketball Association salaries average per year NBA salaries average million according to research cited by Essence zine This doesn't include ments but it's obvious a young girl's hoop dreams don't offer the same payday as her brother's Some guys get paid more to warm a bench man super- stars like Rebecca Lobo and Lisa Nina once joked with a CNN reporter about going pro if she were offered a million contract Considerable hubbub ensued because the clip they used showed Nina saying only I'd definitely go and she spent a long time explaining herself Though she never took back the 1 million contract part of her statement she has changed her mind School and college ball are what's important to her right now Currently she's in a summer gram at the University of sin so she can get a jump-start on her studies and stay in shape when the season starts I have some aspirations of course to play professional and it'd be great if I had that opportunity she says But I really see myself getting a job a family that whole thing People say You can make so much money Yeah but would I be SHOPPE SEASONAL GOODS FLORAL SUPPLIES SILK FLOWERS America's Most Complete Creative Centen Floral Stems ALL STYLES VARIETIES OF SINGLE STEMMED FLOWERS DESIGNER STEMS ETC Off i OUR LOW ITEMS NOT INCLUDED German Statice OUR EVERYDAY LOW 1.99 Furniture Sale BISTRO SETS ETAGERES BAKERS A a e RACKS ROOM DIVIDERS CAST fit RON PATIO SETS 4 PIECE WICKER SETS PAINTED FURNITURE SALE LIMITED TO STOCK ON HAND INVENTORY VARIES BY STORE Short Sleeve T-Shirt CALLING ALL HOME MAKERS Brought To You By Martha Muller MAKING YOUR HOME ATTRACTIVE AND PRACTICAL Someone once defined successful as ating an that's nice to live and nice to look at To put it Martha Muller another way homes II are both attractive and practical and those goals can be all at once or through the years Not only that but those goals can be reached on a big budget or a small one You can take advantage of all the elements that are available to us from the right use of color accessories and of course the choice of furniture This is where we can help you We can not only aid you in ing within your budget but also in picking out the very things that will make your home as pretty and practical as possible Some of the ways we can help you include suggesting perhaps dual-purpose furniture to let you solve space and functional lems or helping you find a ic piece of furniture for your home We're here to make YOUR decorating both easy and tive All of this can be a ing experience and we invite you to browse here and talk with with no that your home can grow to serve your needs and have the look you want JERRY'S FURNITURE 1209 FLAMMANG DR WATERLOO IA COTTON 16 FASHION COLORS YOUTH ADULT M L XL Off OUR EVERYDAY LOW PRICES DOES NOT INCLUDE STAR STRIPES T-SHIRTS Wicker Baskets LARGE SELECTION OF SIZES SHAPES STYLES Off I OUR EVERYDAY LOW PRICES PREVIOUSLY REDUCED ITEMS NOT All Home Accent Metalware MANY COLORS TO CHOOSE FROM ITEMS OF MIXED MEDIUMS FURNITURE NOT INCLUDED ISrl II OUR EVERYDAY LOW PRICES All Remaining Garden Containers Birdhouses Statuary Off OUR EVERYDAY LOW PRICES Foam Products CHAIR TADS PILLOW FORMS COT PADS SHREDDED FOAM Off OUR LOW PRICES All Decorator Bottles Glass Containers OUR EVERYDAY LOW PRICES All Stickers STICKERS FEATURING MRS GROSSMANS FRANCES MEYER OUR EVERYDAY LOW PRICES FEATURING HOT OFF THE PRESS 4 THE PAPER PATCH IN BULK SOUPS PRINTS 4 ENVELOPES OUR MEMORY BOOK BLOWOUT Wavy Edge Scissors Memories The Cherished Line BY ALBUMS ACCESSORIES OUR EVERYDAY OUR EVERYDAY LOW PRICES Heat Embossing Tool 14.99 OUR EVERYDAY LOW 19.99 Pens Markers OUR EVERYDAY LOW PRICES All Rubber Stamps OUR LOW PRICES tape no than iwo minutes creative centers PRICES GOOD THROUGH WATERLOO 3731 UNIVERSITY AVENUE 2066 E RIDGEWAY AVENUE STORE SATURDAY CLOSED SUNDAY SEE US AT Cake Decorating Classes CLASSES START TUESDAY July SEE YOUR LOCAL HOBBY STORE FOR CLASS INFORMATION Available At Both Stores M US S WHO
