run four years ago which he financed with million of his own money this time he's going to ask others to help finance his campaign Perot who appeared on a sion call-in show immediately after his acceptance speech attacked his Democratic and Republican nents President Clinton and former senator Bob Dole as representatives of political parties who cannot solve the nation's problems because they are the problems He also vowed to overcome efforts by the major parties to keep him out of debates with Clinton and Dole saying It would be the dumbest thing they've ever done We will be in the debate and it will be fun Perot who has not named a ning mate but said he would do so in just a few said he would not accept contributions from cal action committees and criticized Clinton and Dole for taking PAC money It is wrong These guys are bought and paid for by the special he said As for Dole's plan to cut taxes and to rely on the theory of supply-side economics which holds that the money saved on taxes would be spent and boost the economy Perot said We've been there done that We tried it in the 80s and it didn't work There's no free candy no free lunch To a caller to Larry King Live who asked how Dole could increase defense spending and cut the deficit Perot said It's a sham magic acts and illusions a shell game mat won't work Perot's decision to accept federal funding of his campaign evoked AP PHOTO Ross Perot addresses his party's convention In Valley Forge Pa Sunday Perot criticized Republicans and Democrats as captives of special Interests mixed reviews here His son-in-law Dallas lawyer Clay Mulford said the action will help institutionalize the party beyond the image of its founder Because of liis strong an independent in 1992 when he won 19 percent of the vote Perot is eligible to accept million in matching funds But by ing that money federal election law limits him to spending of his own money He may he can get it raise another million in contributions to reach the lion that both Clinton and Dole will get in federal matching funds One person Perot has yet to win over is Richard Lamm the former three-term Democratic governor of Colorado who sought the party's nomination and was joined in that quest by Perot less than two days er Lamm who lost by a margin of nearly reiterated his support for a new third party Sunday but backed off his previous commitment to support its nominee I'm not making any Lamm said of a tangled voting cess in which only 5 percent of the 1.1 million people who requested ballots and gave accurate addresses voted by mail phone or e-mail But there are enough questions about the results Lamm said that I don't want to endorse at this time Lamm added I couldn't in good conscience recommend that a whole bunch of my friends come into this party Clinton defends his record wife in television interview Chicago Tribune NEW YORK President Clinton on Sunday strongly defended his ues convictions and record and that of first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton and took the Republican Party to task for criticizing them over the past three years saying that GOP leaders practice the politics of destruction Clinton's characterization of the Republicans which was made in a television interview came just hours before he told a room of supporters and contributors that he has warned other Democratic leaders not to mimic the caustic language of the Republican Party during the cratic National Convention which is scheduled to begin next week Nonetheless the president Republicans for their repeated criticism of his wife saying history would be a kinder judge of her ties as first lady a devoted child AP PHOTO President Clinton and CBS anchorman Dan Rather get ready to chat in the Oval Office for an Interview for the television news program 60 Minutes Sunday advocate caring mother and loyal partner than would Republicans And Clinton bristled at some pointed verbal jabs aimed at Hillary Clinton including one by former President George Bush The Republicans from the moment I began running saw that I was a different sort of Democrat had a different philosophy wanted to break out of this debate And they have been working very hard on me and on Hillary and on everybody else they can work Clinton told 60 Minutes I'm very proud of her And I think when history looks back at her and the impact she had on the women and young girls particularly in this country and all around the world I feel very good about that Clinton on the eve of his birthday also pointedly dismissed any notion that the issue of age should play a role the upcoming presidential campaign nor should it be considered a reason not to vote for Republican nominee Bob Dole I think a man who's 73 in good health can do the job He'd maybe have to make some modifications maybe not do it exactly the way I've done Clinton said But the main thing is whether the ideas are old or new and I think that my ideas for the future are better and that's the thing I want to fight the election on Waterloo test scores fall Courier Staff Writer Performance on the ACT college entrance exam slipped below last year's level in Cedar Falls but the drop
