FALLS Fighting for the lead incumbent Mayor Jon Crews edged out challenger Lee Miller by a nose Tuesday night but the race is not over yet Because Crews did hot capture more than 50 percent of the Cedar Falls vote there will be a run-off election between Miller and Crews on Dec 5 Crews collected votes or 44 percent by the time the polls closed at 8 p.m Miller who surged ahead at times during the tabulation of the 20 precincts finished close on Crews heels with votes or 43 percent Challenger Dick Robert finished with 881 votes or 13 percent an important tion of votes for the upcoming showdown between the two ing candidates Of course I'm disappointed in the way things turned said Robert who had to forfeit his Third Crews Miller Ward City Council seat to run for mayor But I appreciate the support I did get He will continue to run his real estate business and said he is ful for the opportunity he had to serve the city as a council member for six years Robert said he will support Miller in the run-off election Robert was by far the most vocal candidate in the campaign taking aim at things he felt were wrong with the Crews But both Crews and Robert were in agreement on one issue that the streets could not be repaired without some kind of ing or assessment He ran a very strong campaign He has a lot of energy and ideas for Cedar Falls and he has had the interest of the city at Crews said of his opponent Robert Both Crews and Miller said they expect things will also heat up between them now since they'll be able to debate one-on-one about the issues facing the city primarily their differences on how to solve the street repair problem There are already plans in the works to schedule a formal debate or two Crews said Tuesday night at his campaign headquarters Dinkins and his wife Joyce give thumbs up to after he won the mayoral race in New York City Tuesday soft-spoken campaign that dwelled not at all on race He replaces the often acerbic Ed Koch and will while in Seattle City Councilman Norm Rice defeated busing foe Doug Jewett to gain a similar distinction Ohio state Sen Michael R White defeated his old mentor City cil President George Forbes in a bitter contest between two black Democrats to succeed retiring Republican Mayor George Voinovich The nasty tone in Cleveland was all too typical of the year's Giuliani a former U.S attorney was unrelenting in his attacks on Dinkins calling the ELECTION Continued on page A6 By JOY POWELL Courier Staff Writer EVANSDALE Fred Saul was soundly beaten in his bid for a fourth mayoral term and he and other incumbents in the Action Party blamed their loss on the emo- charged issue of the AIDS hospice Charles Chuck Vondracek won over Saul who joined four other council members in losing their seats in a surprisingly strong turnout of 44 percent of the eligible voters We feel it was primarily the AIDS issue a Saul said after the totals came in with Vondracek capturing 65 cent of the vote Joan Thompson another losing incumbent said party members learned while campaigning that zens blamed Saul for their ness with the location in a River Forest Road neighborhood In the upset William Marvels grabbed 62 percent of the vote to beat out Phil Muehl in the second ward Mark Atkins barely beat Thompson with 119 votes to her 105 in the 4th Ward In two vacancies Ken Loftus garnered 616 votes to John Mardis 407 and Jim Glaze drew 595 votes to Willard Dale's 424 votes The Action party candidates agreed that the controversial siting process for the county's hospice was at the root of voter tion But Vondracek downplayed the hospice issue saying it shouldn't have helped the Citizen's party win As he left a victory party at a local tavern owned by Loftus Saul Reformers fill posts after East German Politburo resignations BERLIN AP East ruling Politburo resigned today and the Communist Party replaced the aging leaders with reformers in a dramatic bid to gain control of a country convulsed by protests and the exodus of sands of its people The action followed Tuesday's resignation of the entire Cabinet and another round of street involving more than people in four cities who demanded the right to choose their own government East Germans skeptical about the government's promises of reforms continued to flee their homeland today with more than ple reaching West Germany leader Erich Honecker The aging leadership had increasingly lost credibility especially in the face of massive defections to the West Krenz in office just three weeks faces great difficulties as he
