Waterloo Courier, The (Newspaper) - May 16, 1888, Waterloo, Iowa 3 WATERLOO IOWA WEDNESDAY MAY 1C 1888 WHOLE NUMBER 1507 WATERLOO COURIER Bates May Be Reduced A dispatch from Chicago last Satur day states that it has been developed that the elaborate distance tariff which the Iowa roads put into effect Thurs day was only adopted conditionally and there is more than afair prospect that rates all over the State of Iowa will drop 10 to 12 per cent before the end of the month The Illinois Cen tral claims that the new Iowa rates are too high in comparison with the St Paul rates and in consequence place Iowa shippers at a disadvantage It however has agreed to adopt the new tariff if the Northwestern roads will agree to advance rates to St Pan about 30 per cent so as to equalize the Iowa and tbe St Paul tariffs A meet ing of the northwestern roads has been called Tuesday to consider the proposition In the event which is considered a certainty that the roads do not agree to advance rates in the Northwest the Illinois Central will at once give notice that it will put into effect a new distance tariff reduc ing its rates oh all lines in Iowa 10 to 12 per cent This will force compet ing lines to take similar action and as the law requires rates to be made on a fixed mileage basis it will result in a 10 per cent reduction in local and through rates all over the State of Iowa It may be added as an indica tion of the sentiment of the freight agents that at the recent meeting at which this matter was considered a resolution was adopted stating in ef fect that in the event of a failure to advance St Paul rates any road would be justified in issuing its own individual distance tariff The reso lution has however until now been kept a profound secret by the railroad officials There was caught in the Boyer river near Dunlap a few days ago a monster turtle that measured twenty four inches across and had the naune of L H Rees April 1847 cut in its shell on the back Where did this stranger come from and where was he going and how old is he is a mystery J Lusk Co of Sau Francisco operating the largest establishment for canning fruits and vegetables in the world made an assignment Friday T Coeman the head oE the com mission firm that assigned a few days ago is the principal creditor The lia are estimated to be Coleman Co have endorsed much of the canning company paper floated in the east It is thought that the assign ee can carry on the business until the affairs of the company can be straight ened out Measures have been taken in George H Thomas post No 5 G A B of Chicago to procure a decision from the Eea of that organization on the action of E D Baker post of Philadelphia in admit ting a Joe Johnston to a contributory membership The ques tion ia raised that there can be no con or a regular mem but that if ouch membership can be established by post those who bore arms against the United States are ineligible as in the case of regular membership A cyclone of tremendous force swept over a portion of Northern Indiana Friday night The telegraph wires throughout considerable territory are prostrated and the extent of its rava ges can only be formed from the few scattering reports At Winslow siding on the Nickel Plate a train of sixteen freight cars was lifted from the track and distributed across the sur rounding prairies At Wanatah a number of houses were unroofed A dispatch says Valparaiso was not touched The storm was deflected two miles south Three hundred telegraph poles were leveled in that vicinity A Colorado Wreck DENVER Col May reached here that the Thunderbolt on the Santa Fe collided with a freight train near Fountain at 6 oclock this morning A car of powder on the freight arrived at Fountain at a m and Lad only been standing a few minutes when the caboose and some cars the brakes of which had got loose in some way ran down from tbe sidetrack and struck the train with force One car was loaded with naptha which exploded throwing oil over everything setting the train on fire The trainmen shoved the uninjured cars back from the wreck and were trying to save the depot when it was ered that two cars were standing on tbe main track that were not wrecked The nearest one was burning and was tagged powder Shortly afterward the car exploded completely demolishing the depot several dwellings and number of cars One dwelling and the depot were consumed Three persons one woman and two men were by the explosion and some twelve or fifteen persons were wounded none very the flood subsides The riv er in some places is several miles wide and entire farms are under water The damage in one way or another will reach several thousands of dollars In some instances dwelling houses have floated off and been carried down stream it is thought the flood has reached its height The Bur lington track and lauding is entirely under water and the transfer boat is bringing over cars and unloading them into the depot The Illinois Central depot is under water and a raised plat form has been constructed to enable passengers to land The trains move slowly and cautiously on the track flve inches under water Steamboats are doing little or no business for the rea son that freight cannot be received at the levee In fact business of every description is paralyzed DUBUQUE May section of the bulkhead which runs across the south chanuel of the Miss between the Rock Island arsen al and the main shore This bulkhead vas constructed of heavy blocks of Nauvoo stone and was seven hundred feet long Five hundred feet of this wall has disappeared and it is believed the rest has been so badly damaged as to need rebuilding The wall cost the Government The tide of water coming to the city in front of Rock Island carried to mid stream 000 worth of logs from the upper saw mills and the freight warehouse of the St Paul packet line All trains are abandoned on the St Paul road be tween here and Savanna in conse of the floods on the sia and on the Peoria roads on ac count of a long railway embankment which threatens to break and flood the lowlands Hundreds of families are moving out of their houses tonight KEOKUK May river at this point rose six inches during the night and passed the danger line today It is rising at the rate of half an inch per hour and is now within a few inches of the highest mark in 1881 All business is suspended in the lumber districts The efforts of the men engag ed in saving property of the Rock Island car shops are completely suspended by the water and a rise of eight inches will put it over the floor of the round house and machine shops of that com pany Railroad tracks in tbe lower part of the city are under water and traffic is being seriously interfered with At Alexandria a few miles be low here the water is up to within four inches of the top of the levee which affords a means of protection to the town The leves at Alexandria sons and three young ladies sisters At all events says the they were supposed to be so The family were held in the highest respect and un til an incident we are to relate oc curred the household was undisturbed by any occurrence of the young ladies were In appear ance and gifted with many accomplish ments The eldest we was not devoid of good looks either and possessed a certain amount of musical culture which was displayed effectively at numerous reunions parties and evening as about their neighborhood She also developed a remarkable talent for drawing She was frequently met with at social assemblies and places of entertain ment and was admired everywhere for her good looks and accomplishments Sho was an admirable tennis player and was alto gether an agreeable figure in the set in which she moved About a couple of months ago it was announced that she was about to proceed to to complete her studies jn the South Kensington School of Art and naturally news caused some interest among her acquaintances She came back at Christmas and many ladies who were acquainted with the family called at their house to see her What was the astonishment of the visitors when the mother calmly announced that her daughter svas boy und then the quondam miss en tered the room in masculine at tire having completely abandoned the char acter which she or he as we must now call him had been so long assuming of Tho incident gave rise to great perturbation among the acquaintances of tho family and as a result no little unpleasantness oc curred Those who knew the young gen as extremely astonished at the turn affairs havo taken They find it hard to believe that such a deception could have gone on for years without any suspicion of the real circumstances being entertained The young man has been re 33 a
