compile the following ligures of the vote cast at the late election The Secretary of State Frank D Jackson received 160057 votes and Cato Sells received 104714 Jacksons majority 15343 The total vote was 742 more than was cast at the election in and Jackson received 4053 votes more than were cast for Larrabee while Sells vote is 3788 less than was given Whiting a year ago This change is wonderfully significant as showing that about 4000 persons who voted for the Democratic candidate last year this year voted the Republican ticket Add to this 5000 votes which it is claimed were cast for Sells with the balance of the ticket Republican Rives the real Republican majority in Iowa about 20000 Pretty good for an off year The complete returns from this Con gressional district are as follows Counties Secy of State Congressmen Itou 2452 The new law relating to grand juries makes quite a change in the number and in the selection of tne body In comities lowing it population of 10000 or less the jury shall bn composed of live members and in counties having more than 10000 seven members Whenever the number of civil town ships in any county equals or exceeds the number of grand have scored a splendid victory It is esti mated that Cato Sells for Secretary of State ran 5000 votes ahead of the bal ance of tbe Democratic ticket and as he is beaten by some 15000 majority it follows that the balance of the Dem ticket fails of an election by at least 20000 This is the true measure of the Republican victory and is a big ger majority than Elaine received in this State Then too it was achieved upon a poll about the same as that cast last year when Larrabee had only about 5000 majority This shows that the people propose to stick by the party and that Iowa is not and never will be a doubtful State It may but it will not prohibit EIGHMEY BROS CLOSING OUT their entire stock or Dry Goods and Boots and Shoes REGARDLESS OF COST For the next IK Jays See our Flannels Ginghams that a very large number of Irishmen in that city who have heretofore been demo crats voted the republican ticket this year The tariff issue was the pivotal one in the minds of these Irish voters and on this question Gear and Congressman Hall the democratic can represent exactly opposite prin ciples Gear is a pronounced protec and he gave great prominence in his canvass to the tariff question Hall on the other hand is a free trad er of the most radical type The Hawk eye expresses opinion that a large majority of Irish citizens of Burlington actually voted for Gear and that the same influences also secured an impor tant percentage of Irish citizens in er parts of the district On the state and local tickets also a considerable percentage of the Irishmen of the dis voted with the republicans
