Waterloo Courier, The (Newspaper) - June 30, 1886, Waterloo, Iowa VOLUME WATERLOO IOWA WEDNESDAY JUNE 30 188G WHOLE NUMBER 1409 WATERLOO COURIER Kinsey Jordan notorious keeper was jailed Saturday night on a line of 81000 or 300 days in jail Mrs L Tucker of Maquoketa be came insane during the recent hot weather and on Monday drowned her self hi a cistern Grandma Jordan as she was called the oldest person in Iowa died at Wiota Friday night aged 111 years She was born in Lexington Senator Lafe Young of Atlantic has purchased the Des Monies Capital paying 58000 for it Senator Young isone of the strong newspaper men of the State and by making the Capital a strong newspaper he will meet with success A from Cedar Rapids last Monday states that 91 persons who ate ice cream at a festival in Saturday night were poisoned The poison caused vomiting fever and convulsions All how ever afternoon John and William Level of Vinton got in to a dispute over some furniture when John picked up a stick hard wood and struck his brother a fearful blow over the head causing wounds from which his recovery is considered doubtful That is a strange thing to take place in this country It would a strange thing to hap pen in any country if loyally is to be punished and treachery be rewarded But to such strange conclusions have things come in this country that the men who wore the blue tind itll for public service and reward and the men who tried to break up the Union have their infamy crowned with public honors Congress may order and tlie President may restore to his old rank the man who proved recreant to his trust on the field of battle but the verdict of history will be the ver dict that Lincoln and Garfield pro upon him It is a strange coincidence that while Congress was passing the to restore Porter to his rank and pay him a year as long as he shall live the President was vetoing a to pay a few dollars a month to the widow of the soldier who presided over the court martial that convicted him of coward ice and treachery The words of Logan come in with peculiar appropriateness to such a spectacle If you are true when you might be treacherous you are vetoed There is no difficulty in giving a pension of a year to a man who failed in the hour ot need while the widows of Union soldiers who fought gallantly for their country and died in its defense are denied a paltry pittance because they cannot produce all the technical evidence to support their claims that a substitute President requires There is little en for men to be patriotic and true iu the treatment that patriot ism and fidelity receive in these latter days WATER ATT AT BARRY SONS THE PLUMBERS Office and Shop with Water Company Opposite the Postoffice Railroad Items Up to last Saturday evening the Auditor of State had drawn war rants on account of the expenses of the impeachment trial The total footed up This does not include the printing which has not been and the guards drove a profitably business in soiling canteens full of whisky ut Ifo each Promptly the hold wua trans formed into a floating hell The air grew denser and denser with tobacco smoke Drunken men to and fro They yelled and sang and danced and then they fought and fought again were formed mid within them men pounded each other fiercely They rolled on tho slimy floor and howled and swore and bit and gouged and the de lighted spectators cheered them to re double their efforts Out of these fights others sprang into life and from these still others The noise was horrible Tho wharf in turn attacked We drovo them out of the hold The hatch at the head of the stairs waa closed and locked The recruits were maddened with whisky Dozens of men ran amuck striking every one they came to and be ing struck and kicked and stomped on in return The ventilation hatches wero surrounded with sentinels who gazed into the gloom below and warned all of us not to try to get out by climbing through tho hatches sprang high in the air and clutched the and had their hands smashed with Sentinels paced to and fro along the vessels deck and called loudly to al row boats to keep off or they would be fired upon They did not intend that any fresh supplies of whisky should be brought to us The prisoners in this floating hell were then told to go it and they went it We had been searched for last Saturday by Judge of the Superior Court in Cedar Rapids The defendant was a Mrs a leader in the army who was charged with beating a bass drum on the streets on Sunday aud that snare drums and tambourines were also beaten by per sons in the procession The defend ant contended that the beating of the drums etc was a part of the religious exercises of the array and could not be construed as a misdemeanor Judge Stoneman in his rulings upon the sub ject held that the guarantee of the constitution was intended to protect people in the reasonable exercise of re ligious liberty and he continued It has never been understood in civilized countries that religious lib erty subverted the duty of all men to so use their own right as not unreason ably to interfere with the equal rights of others Any other definition than would be subversion of religious liberty and put it in the power of the noisy few who might desire to cele brate their orgies on the public streets with the beating of drums the blast of trumpets and the roar of cannon on the Sabbath to render the holding of other religious assemblies by the quiet multitude of orderly people impossible The constitution does not justify the assumption of the defendants that the rafting of conduct otherwise The Game Pishes of the West is the title of a special illustrated edition of the American Angler just issued Besides other
