oldest person in Iowa died at Wiota Friday night aged 111 years She was born in Lexington Senator Lafe Young of Atlantic has purchased the Des Monies Capital paying 58000 for it Senator Young isone of the strong newspaper men of the State and by making the Capital a strong newspaper he will meet with success A from Cedar Rapids last Monday states that 91 persons who ate ice cream at a festival in Saturday night were poisoned The poison caused vomiting fever and convulsions All how ever afternoon John and William Level of Vinton got in to a dispute over some furniture when John picked up a stick hard wood and struck his brother a fearful blow over the head causing wounds from which his recovery is considered doubtful That is a strange thing to take place in this country It would a Bloomington Ills last Saturday morning oclock after a long ill ness The immediate cause of his death was erysipelas the outgrowth of a malignant carbuncle which first ap April 20 The physicians how ever claim that he had been afflicted with diabetes for two years past For a week before his death he was scious most of the time and he passed away painlessly The funeral held yesterday and was largely attend ed many persons of State and Nation al reputation being present The announcement was made Mon day afternoon that the strike on the Lake Shore road was end ed the determined efforts of the police and their disposition to use revolvers when occasion demanded having a salutary effect Sunday an attempt was made to start out a freight train crowded with officers The strikers got another engine and started to chase the fleeing train They were running on parallel tracks but the strikers bad to give up as their track was obstruct ed by ears When they stopped their engine the police pursued them and succeeded in capturing twentyfive of their number On Monday trains black with police armed with Win chesters were sent out and succeeded in running the gauntlet and at p m the strike was declared The B C R N railroad is rapidly put in shape New steel is being put in from Cedar Rapids north weighing eight pounds more than the present and is now laid to a point a few miles above this city All the bridges are being put in first class shape stone arches being put in wherever the bridges are of any It is stated that when the track is en tirely repaired a train will be put on which will make better time than any other train run in the State The Illinois Central trains have been making spurts lately Last Thursday freight train No 13 consisting of 18 loads and C empties made the distance from Dubuque to Waterloo in five hours or two hours less than time card time Passenger train No 1 the night before ran from Pt Dodge to Water loo 100 miles in three hours and ten minutes besides stopping at all the stations The other day the Diagonal train south made the distance from this city to Wilsons about live miles in seven minutes The B C R N is selling tickets to Spirit Lake and return from this point for Tickets good for 30 days Groves Nichols shipped a car load of horses to Minneapolis yesterday over the B C R N Ry They were purchased in the southern part of the state O P Durham shipped a car load of horses to Connecticut on Pri day Five stock cars were ordered from C R N by the Wayerly Short Line last Saturday They were wanted for the first cattle shipment over the leader in the army who was charged with beating a bass drum on the streets on Sunday aud that snare drums and tambourines were also beaten by per sons in the procession The defend ant contended that the beating of the drums etc was a part of the religious exercises of the array and could not be construed as a misdemeanor Judge Stoneman in his rulings upon the sub ject held that the guarantee of the constitution was intended to protect people in the reasonable exercise of re ligious liberty and he continued It has never been understood in civilized countries that religious lib erty subverted the duty of all men to so use their own right as not unreason ably to interfere with the equal rights of others Any other definition than would be subversion of religious liberty and put it in the power of the noisy few who might desire to cele brate their orgies on the public streets with the beating of drums the blast of trumpets and the roar of cannon on the Sabbath to render the holding of other religious assemblies by the quiet multitude of orderly people impossible The constitution does not justify the assumption of the defendants that the rafting of conduct otherwise The Game Pishes been found guilty of repeating the offense the court imposes ou her a fine of fifty dollars and orders her imprisoned in the county jail until the line is paid The Judge however ordered the sentence
