that the company has refused to pay to him any part of the proceeds of said sale or the salary due him as editor Hence he sues for oOO and interest and claims that the capital stock of the Times This is a good sale an d Will is entitled to cred it for getting the contract op played a strange freak at Cedar Falls last Saturday morning Just before seven oclock a storm came up which passed over the town though but little rain fell The lightning however struck the chimney of the Methodist church and ran down on the inside of the building Prom the chimney it jumped to the pulpit platform and ran along ic tearing up a couple of boards At one side of the platform there was a small stand which supported a large bible The lightning struck this stand and tore it to pieces It also struck the bible and tore out all the leaves comprising the book of but without otherwise injuring the book A part of this stand was found on the back seat of the church The pastor been in the but left it a few place on the 15th He took a gun to bed with him and sometime during the night shot himself There has been something over ten thousand bushels of oats shipped from here in the last ten days Rev health general discussion by those pres ent it was decided to hold the annual reunion and picnic of the association in the west side park in this city on Saturday June 20 It was also thought best to have an address delivered on that occasion and the Secretary was in to invite Hon Jed Lake of Independence to be the orator of the day and Rev John Bowman of Cedar Falls to act as chaplain It is design ed to have music and an interesting programme in every particular Fol lowing the exercises there will be a picnic dinner and everyone is invited to come prepared in particular tor this feature of the programme The funeral of the late Dr 1 S Cae sar was held at the 1st Baptist church last Thursday morning and was large ly attended Mr Bingham of Port Hope Ontario father of Mrs Caesar arrived in the city in time for the fu neral Mrs Caesar will return with him and make her home there in fu ture Mrs Dr Mack is in Omaha visit ins with the Fullers and Bert Kim ball Rev II Garton of the 1st church of this city recently received an invitation to take charge of the State mission work of the church and on Monday lie received a unanimous call to the pastorate of the 1st Baptist church in Cedar Rapids We regret to say that there is a possibility of his ac the latter Mr Garton has been here twelve years nearly and is one of the most effective pastors to be found any where in the State and wo hope he will remain here BIG Last Wednesday evening a procession of carriages 78 in number came down from Cedar Falls bringing a large number of the citizens of our neighboring city to pay us an evening visit After driving around town about a hundred took sup per at the Irving during which time the band came out and serenaded them Monday evening the Waterloo folks returned the compliment and left here at 7 oclock headed by the band As the procession passed the Irving there were 130 teams and as it left the city there were 140 Several parties had gone ahead however and when the procession reached Cedar Falls there were 100 rigs and about 500 peo ple from this city After driving around the city refreshments were served at the Burr House and after wards some of the young folks held a dance at Markleys hall a string band having been taken from here for that purpose Although the drive was a dusty everybody seemed to enjoy themselves hugely By an oversight no mention was made of a very pleasant affair which took place at the residence of B D Smith a week ago last Saturday even ing On that evening members of the Presbyterian church to the number of 35 called and after pleasant greetings Rev E X Barrett in behalf of the church presented Miss Lilian Smith with a handsome pair of opera glasses as a slight testimonial of the esteem in which she is held and their iion of her services as organist of the church On presenting the glasses he to look through the object glasses towards any object which was not pleasing thereby removing it far from her and through the eyeglasses in contemplating that which is pleas ant and agreeable thus magnifying r and bringing near whatever is good I and lovely in character and life Miss Smith was completely taken by sur prise but responded in a very pleasant l and graceful manner After spending the evening most enjoyably the guests withdrew with many good wishes for their hostess HUDSON ITEMS Miss Jessie Washburn of this place if spending a few days with a lady friend at Washburn There was a large gathering at the TJ B church last Tuesday evening The ladies served ice cream and cake and the band treated the company to music they play well All seemed to enjoy themselves Mr Noah Morgan and his sister Mrs Rheynokls of Washington township are spending a few weeks at this place Mr Morgan is taking treatments of Dr Sheffield and Mrs Rheynolds is taking care of him Miss Alma Sargent who is spending the summer with her sister came home to spend the Sabbath The U B quarterly meeting will be held here next Saturday and Sunday There was a larger attendance at the Y M C A than usual A large attendance greeted Rev at Eagle Center last Sabbath ECHO Jos mother of Mrs John Nauman died at the resi dence of her daughter in this city Monday morning and was buried yes afternoon She was about 75 years old and was the mother of eleven children eight of whom were present at the funeral her husband also sur vives her The services were conduct ed in German and were largely attend ed Mrs Williams mother of Miss Em ma Williams died last Saturday after noon aged about years of sis The funeral services were held Monday The A II Wilber
