Waterloo Courier (Newspaper) - July 2, 1884, Waterloo, Iowa VOLUME 3 WATERLOO IOWA WEDNESDAY JULY 2 1881 of By the failure of the banking house Co of Washington Mrs Judge the wife of the murdered Mississippi jurist lost 100 the savings of five years work in the Treasury department We understand that G B Stilson he present efficient county recorder is not a candidate for reelection In this connection tho name of Mr C D Seeker of Lincoln township is men as a candidate Mr Becker is firstclass man in every respect and f he should receive the nomination he vould be elected by a rousing majori y and would make a worthy official The Dubuque Herald having charged hat the time of holding the reunion of lie 12th Iowa this year was changed or the avowed purpose of accommodat ug Col Henderson Abner Dunham of the 12th Iowa Reuion Associa ion writes to tho Times a letter in he says In making these changes neither Henderson nor bis interests were Consulted nor had he the means of knowing of the contemplated changes until advised of them by printed cir cular announcing the same and in the same manner that the rest of our com rades were advised Nor were the in erests of no one in particular but of 11 the comrades in general consulted WATERLOO COURIER WHOLE 1305 ast Saturday night the flouring mill of U M Todd at Bock Falls Iowa was entirely destroyed by fire Loss Senator Allison is being named for he secretary of the Treasury in Blaines cabinet A better man for the place could not be found On Saturday last the House commit ee 011 Elections by a vote of uix to Eive decided to report in the contest ed case of Frederick vs Wilson in fa ror of the former Alice Oates who used to shine in opera bouffe is now singing and danc g in the Theater Comique in Wash She is living with her eighth and is growing fat and home For years John Brennan of Sioux lity has been one of the leading men among tha Irishmen of this State He s an eloquent orator and his heart is lull of love for his fatherland and anx for its good For years he has been a Democrat an honest thinking Democrat and he has arrived at the conclusion which every thinking man reach that the vacillating free rade policy of that party is in the in erest of England and to the Betterment of Irishmen In view of this je declares that he can no longer re main in that party and he has written the following ringing letter which ap in a recent issue of the Irish World Much as I love the pivotal Demo ratic principle sincerely as I hope hat this principle shall ultimately tri umph in effect giving to every State and to every people the largest liberty consistent with National integrity more ardently do I hope to me a sweeter hour when the political action of the Irish race shall be with reference to the ques tions to be acted upon For the past twenty years pur people have acted in American politics like a steam engine going down steam exhaust ed with a sort of spent political force It is true they have bad for their guid ance what is called a Democratic plat form and might be said to vote accord ing to it but does anybody doubt that if the platform had been the antithesis of the thing it was that they would vote the ticket just the same In the name of reason isnt it time that we should exercise the privilege free from stigma of voting for those men and measures that suit us best I am not now arguing that we are in duty bound to vote the Republican tick et but I am contending that we are not necessarily bound to vote the Dem ticket against our own interests and feelings Our people are and have been for a couple of generations the bone and sinew of the Democratic par ty of the North Mainly we have been right We were right in our instinct ive attachment to that moral essence that indestructible something called Democratic principle but if the nite something called the Democratic party will surrender that principle and if it will rush into the co with England and for English interest am I morally bound to follow Xot I For love of its principle and its names and its traditions our people have followed it far enough We have permitted ourselves to be bound to the slave power back to back Too many of us have aided by our votes to deny the political rights of the black man and have blindly followed the name and fortunes of the Democratic party until its majority the people of the South have come to regard us as a reliable at to be wagged at pleasure By this unthinking unquestioning course we have invited and received the dis pleasure of a majority of the people of the and the party in power hopeless of ever overcoming our dices have paid little attention to our demands as a people Thus for twen ty years our two million votes have been as powerless in influencing the public policy of this republic as if they were annually flung in the gutter Is it not about time that we if we arc to perpetually vote the Democratic tick et should have something to say as to what Democratic party policy should be and if regardless of our desires and our interests its policy should be lated to advance English interest in America does the fact that we are Ir ish stultify us and enslave us at the same time and compel us to vote its ticket In conclusion let me repeal the question and beg an answer for the enlightenment of your million readers If I am heartily and for good cause op posed to the free trade policy of the Democratic party am I just because J am an in honor or duty bonne to vote the Democratic ticket JOHN Valley Medical Association In accordance with a circular sent out hy a number of the members of the profession in this city a meet ng was held in the parlors of the Irv ng Illinois Central N M June 21 Away out upon tho prairies Whore many heathens dwell Who never heard of Jeans Or heard the Sabbath bell Came your treasured answer to my let ter of inquiry of my treasured friend Uncle Jim Place The last seen of him was that unfortunate night when ho was deprived of that pedal which URS given a halt in his step some 2 years ago upon the Illinois Central Railroad where I carved with cold chisel and hammer the record of the wreck on wall of granite The hand writing on wall remains there to this day and is known by rail road men as Jim Places Rock When things gang aft a glee when bug juice is scarce I like to think of those blessed times of yore where the ardent relieved the boys of their monotony and the railroad man of hi ducats What a pity it is that living in a Territory I caunot revel among and under Chinese transparencies mingle among the aspirants for office Rah for and Logan or Cleveland or any other dark horse be ing democratic in a votary of the lost cause got whipped and now live where there is no representation In conclusion as the clergyman says and that used to suit me when I was a boy and presume you may be of tho same opinion I shall draw to a close I shall cork I shall simmer With intelligence of having seen today Mr Billy Hartman Bobby Kruse am Malone all worthy members o society here honest to a fault good men among their fellows to in ulge in bragging of El re and expenditures it is or me to say I have always paid no hundred cents on a dollar of all my indebtedness and during the past wenty years have expended more rno ey on my great show than all the cir us managers in America combined ver did or ever will upon theirs if hey should attain the age of ah For the season of 1884 every lent of my great show Ims been aug and is replete with new and features There is no animal o arenie act no special feature in any how now traveling that either has lot or cannot now bu seen in the Show In visiting my gigantic establishment you are in beholding all there is to he seen n tha or animal world us pre under canvas All other shows ink into significance by the side of he Great Forepaugh Show As is veil known every tented manager no matter who he is or what name he bears to repro duce a single feature of my vast ag or duplicate in all its veness grandeur and elegance the Great Forepaugh Show The popularity of my exhibition has excited the avarice and of certain rival and hardly a day passes that I do not open or covert attack rom them Conscious of the superior ly of my exhibition over all others I on in the even tenor of my way oblivious of these barking curs and in the confidence of the who for almost a generation seen criticised and admired my colossal to that public now as in the past I leave the upon the merits of my tion John R Lynch of Mississippi who was temporary chairman of the Nation il Convention and is chairman of his State committee as well as a member of he National committee speaks as fol of the outlook in his State Mis is fairly and honestly a lican State by from 20000 to 30000 ma If the proper effort is made by our friends at and the tide should be in our favor especially if we should have good majorities in Maine in September and in Ohio in Mississippi will be safe for the ticket My reasons for this can be briefly stated First there is a deci ded improvement in the tone of public sentiment in the middle and western tier of counties nearly all of which are largely Republican the colored voters being in a majority in nearly all Our principal difference is in the eastern part of the State where there are live or six heavy Republican counties in which the methods of and have been kept up In spite of this am satisfied that Mississippi is good lighting ground and our friends will make a grave mistake if they concede it to the Democrats without an effort Now as to evidence of the improved tone In the western counties in loca elections we have made fusions have removed apprehensions on the part of the property class that their in will be by our suc cess Hence a large number of white men who have heretofore acted will the Democratic parly but are to free trade and to questionable elec tion practices feel that they will not jeopardize their interests in voting ii National in accordance witt their convictions From Natchez where I live I am apprized that an In dependent Blaine and Logan club has been organized composed exclusively of the most intelligent wealthy and re business men of that commu all heretofore Democrats So far the club has a membership of 100 There is the same feeling Western Mississippi It is especially strong at From all I have been able to learn I think we have good chance to carry Virginia Wes North Carolina and Florida We may have a good chance in That however will depend on further developments also entitled by right to UK vote of South Carolina but under ex isting circumstances there is no hope of getting it by the forms of law dividing line in this campaign will be unquestionably on the tariff question The will go with the Dem The protectionists will com with the Republicans f I tor of Nelson to Mn A
