was stated hi out last issue the result of the election in Ohio was a Democratic victory which gives to the Buckeye State a Democratic Governor a Democratic legislature and in aU man probability a Democratic senator to step into Stanley Matthews shoes This latter consideration is the one sweet drop in this bitter dose but we must confess that it is mighty poor consolation Of course there are many ways of accounting for this result but there are some things which come to us with more than usual That portion of Ohio known as the Western Reserve is almost a second edition of Iowa its people are staunch Republicans and on all previous occas ions could be looked to for large Rep majorities This year how ever large numbers of them stayed away from the polls and thus allowed the Democrats to make great gains in this very heart of Ohio Republicanism It is very evident that they have felt the effect of too much Stanley Mat thews and no doubt many of them feel but little regret over his probable defeat In Iowa the presence of four differ ent tickets materially changed the usual majorities but John II Gear will probably have 40000 majority over the other John his Democratic com petitor The Republican majority on joint ballot of the House and Senate is a large one and there is no chance for a Democratic successor to Senator Allison at least for the present The extra session of Congress has convened and as was expected the Democrats have chosen Randall as Speaker the House In the Senate three new been sworn in Matthews Cameron and Arm strong In regard to the question of the contested seats it is said that the Democrats claim to have promises from five Republicans that they AvilL vote for Spofford the contestant of Kellogg of Louisiana Whether this is true or not will soon be revealed as these cases of contest will be among the first things to demand attention At the military drill at the Buchanan county fair four companies competed for the prizes The Vinton Paris Manches ter and Independence guards TheVin ton company took the tirst prize the In dependence the second and Paris the ad r Mr John Ortner was elected assessor of Barclay township Mr Ortner is a Dem ocrat but Johns personal popularity was more than to over balance the Republican majority in the township The choice is a good one and the duties of the will be faithfully Vindicator o The following card from C F Clarkson of Grundy county to the Cedar Falls corrects a statement which has be come current to a certain extent in re gard to charges against Doris Martin step father of the girl Martin who was murdered in county sometime since r FAUM Sept a 1877 EDITORS I was sorry to see in the Gazette which I know intends fair dealing with every person the imputation of Doris Martin the stepfather of the murdered Martin Mr Martin has lived on my place for eight years and I have found him in all dealings and ideas an honest man lie sides Jie had no inducement to murder his stepdaughter She had no money coming to her from any source Her father was a brother to her present stepfather and died poor Her grandfather a poor man Doris his son on my place Some man has misled the Gazette into a foolish and cruel imputation and I know you will be more ready to correct it than you were to give circulation to it And and her stepfather always lived in the most amiable relation Did you know all taste as honey The pro duction of grape sugar and glucose opens a new department for Iowa com The ca of the works at Davenport is 500 bushels per day This branch of manu facture bids fair to become of
