Parade of Escort Accompanies Boys to Pennsylvania Station Twenty Organizations With Three Bands in Line Friday Evening SMILES ARE MINGLED WITH TEARS Few Indifferent In Crowd as Troop Train Rolls Away Band Plays Star Spangled Banner and Thousands Cheer Train Arrives Here In Two Sections Lieutenant Munson Left In Warren as Recruiting Officer Wants Seventy-Five Men Immediately MAY ORDERED TO MEXICO AT ONCE Captain C E Bordwell Company I Sixteenth Infantry Warren Prepare carefully and take to camp in triplicate the inventory of property that you will take to camp Do this before leaving home station The transfer to government will be made immediately upon arrival in camp THOMAS L LOGAN Particular significance was attached to tha foregoing telegram received last night before the departure of Company I by Captain The triple inventory order was accepted as the most significant feature of the wire It means that one copy goes to Washington another to General Logan and a third to Captain Ordinarily this would not be required for a week The gist of the order is taken to mean that the Warren troops will be ordered to Mexico immediately on arrival at camp The greatest crowd that ever thronged the streets of Warren The biggest military parade the county has ever known Patriotism throbbing at its highest pitch in local history All of these marked the monster demonstration which took place Friday evening when 72 members of Company I left this city for Mt Gretna to go from there to the Mexican border Four thousand people turned out in 1898 when the soldier boys of Warren left to see service in the Spanish-American war say the chronicles of that date The scenes of that farewell and sendoff were duplicated last evening but on a far grander scale and in a manner absolutely without parallel in the ken oi Use citizens of this county Estimates place the crowd as many as 15.000 It is certain no fewer than 10.000 people participated and were either present in the escort which marched with Company I or else thronged the walks to either side of the parade Smiles and laughter were mingled with sorrow and sobs at the parting There were none who were indifferent Patriotism welled up in the hearts and eyes like a mountain torrent loosed by a cloudburst Thrill alter thrill coursed through the reins of a people gathered if not all to bid their loved ones good bye at least to show their respect and pay honor where honor was due The indifferent persons in that vast crowd which saw the soldiers board the troop train could have been counted on the of a hand The streets in the business section were as quiet as on a morning at six o'clock when the troop train rolled away CROWD GATHERED EARLY It was early in the afternoon when the crowd began to gather in the neighborhood of the Armory Hundreds went to the ball game where the members of the Company were expected to be the guests of honor but i hundreds more were irresistibly attracted toward the building which has been the greatest scene of activity in the city since the orders calling out i the Guard were first received They stood around in groups they knotted in tens and scores until toward late afternoon Hickory street was impassable The soldiers were every tongue V Will they all cone Will they erer get out of Mount Will they really aee Those and like questions wan asked and answered a
