Committee Gives on With for of in tlie Orp WASHINGTON D C Sept C Chairman Faulkner of the ic Congressional Campaign Committee consented this week for the first to give out his estimate of the result of the Congressional elections Ills ures after making a most liberal lowance for doubtful eral many Democrats there will be in the next House 190 Democrats 156 Republicans and 10 Populists As instances of his ty in making allowance for doubtful districts it may be mentioned that he only claims the election of nine cratic Representatives in Illinois while the estimate of the Republican Committee concedes the election of 11 Democrats in that state he only claims 5 in Louisiana while the publicans concede 6 in South Carolina he claims 4 and the Republicans con- cede 6 That will give a fair idea of the care exercised by Senator Faulkner in making up his figures He prr fere underestimating the Democratic strength to overestimating it and has no desire to encroach upon the bluster and bragging which has been such a marked feature of the campaign on the Republican side Senator Hill is just the sort of man who makes strong friends and bitter enemies in his own party but the terest of his enemies will concede that he has hold on the cratic voters of New York which he has demonstrated time and time again Circumstances having made it sary that the Democratic candidate for governor of New York should be a man who could bring out the full Democratic vote of the state which is always a majority it logically that Senator Hill was that man For that reason Democrats in Washington whether they be his friends or his mies were pleased with Senator Hill's nomination and are confident that he will be elected He has never been de- by the voters of New York and he will not be this year There is much disappointment over Senator Hill's nomination but it is confined to the Republicans who were not counting upon such a formidable antagonist A member of the Cabinet was asked by a personal friend how he supposed dent Cleveland would regard the nation of Senator Hill and he quickly Why just as all other good Democrats do as the best that could possibly have been made under ing circumstances The President wishes New York to be carried by the Democrats and I know that he believes that with Senator Hill at the head of the ticket it will be But what about queried this inquisitive friend Let us win the campaign of re- plied the member of the Cabinet then we can begin to discuss the ties and possibilities of 98 Public Printer Benedict has made a decided reform in the government printing office by abolishing piece work and putting all the printers on Nothing around that has caused more bickering and jealousy than the piece work tem which a portion of the men worked under It made a man's pay dependent more upon luck in striking or the favor of his foreman than upon his merits or his skill as a printer By putting them all upon time work the pay is equalized and it is believed that the work will be better done If that the public printer will b enabled to devote much time to more important that he has fore been compelled to waste in ing to the friends of those working on time who wished to get transferred to the piece department because thoy could make more The new tariff abrogated all treaties made under the Kinley law and the formal notice served the department by i Brazil of its intention to abrogate the reciprocity treated between that i and the United States on j j Jan 1 1895 was merely a compliance j I with the expressed terms of the treaty i which were that either country should give the other three months notice So far as this country was the treaty was abrogated the day the new tariff became a law Mr the Brazilian Minister when i asked different sizes of persons nor please the eye of old and young out a great many styles and sizes of goods The stock in any department must be handled at least twice a year or enough old goods will accumulate and cause a big loss to that ment The large line which we have at the present time is not moving as fast as it should and I can see that for it to continue at its present rate enough old goods will accumulate to eat up all the profits that it will make In other words there is no money in it for me and I am going to turn it over to the general public Pants for men boys and children of Pleasant township was held day night for the purpose of coming to an agreement if possible on the price to be paid for the suspension bridge While the result was not an agreement it was the nearest approach to one since the free bridge agitation began and puts the matter in such a shape that no trouble should arise in the two bodies agreeing on a mutually tory and equitable price The Pleasant commissioners have in the past maintained that six thousand dollars was a fair price for the bridge while the borough council bridge com- could not see it in that light and were inclined to stick to their price fourteen thousand dollars The ference was so great that all prospects for an agreement seemed hopeless and the project has hung fire1 for several weeks At last night's meeting the council committee brought their price down to ten thousand dollars and the Pleasant raised theirs to eight thousand dollars This leaves only a difference of two thousand dollars and it looks a- though the matter could ue adjusted easily when they are so in their Monday night the council meets and tlie report of last conference will go before that body for action It is the duty of body to do what is most in the of the and that will bn to the purchase of the old bridge soon as possible by coming to an agreement with the j bridge company and Pleasant township j The commissioners If the old bridge
