Lynnwood Enterprise (Newspaper) - March 21, 1973, Lynnwood, Washington THE ENTERPRISE HOMEMAKER, Wed., Mar. 21,1973 Page 7 EDUCATION SUFFERS WHEN TEACHER MORALE SUFFERS Let's face it. When the morale of the employees of any business declines, the productivity of that business can also decline. And schools are a business... a people business. The morale of Edmonds teachers is in danger of declining. Why? Because the Edmonds School Board is not negotiating fairly with the teachers. Apparently, the Board views negotiations as a threat to its decision-making powers. But, we're not asking the school board members to give up their rights as your elected representatives. Edmonds teachers have been extremely frustrated in their attempts to achieve good-faith collective bargaining. The school board has steadfastly maintained that they will not sign any kind of agreement as a result of negotiations. But, they will sign such agreements with employees other than teachers. Why does the board insist on this unfair, inequitable approach? Teachers are seeking signed agreements that define the teachers' employment relationship with the School District and that contains such items as badly needed class size limitations, effective teacher evaluation procedures, salaries, grievance procedures, teacher lesson preparation time, unemployment compensation, and provisions recognizing the teacher bargaining unit. In the private sector, employer failure to negotiate fairly and to sign such a collective bargaining agreement would clearly constitute grounds for a strike. Edmonds teachers would prefer not to strike. We teachers whose names are listed below strongly support our organization, the Edmonds Education Association, to achieve fair, good-faith negotiations. We need your help. Call your school board member. Call the school superintendent. Let them know you are concerned about the effect of the school board's actions on teacher morale.
