Salt Lake Tribune, The (Newspaper) - August 29, 1975, Salt Lake City, Utah Scientists Cite Peril In Taking Drug During Pregnancy By Kathryn Johnson Press Writer ATLANTA Ga Govern ment scientists say it is possible that women who take the tranqtiilizer Valium during the first three months of pregnancy may increase their chance of giving birth to a baby with a cleft lip Dr Mark J Safra and Dr Godfrey Oakley Jr said the results of a study of 278 in the Atlanta area who had delivered babies with tnajor defects reveal Valium use was four times more common among women who subsequently gave birth to infants with cleft lip with or without cleft palate as compared to mothers of in fants with other major de fects Counsel Needed The researchers indicated that Vallums possible effect on the human fetus might cause some pregnant women to seek abortion advice But they said doctors should counsel such women that a direct relationship between Valium and cleft lips has yet to be demonstrated A spokesman for Hoffmann La Roche Inc manufactur ers of Valium said the drug has been on the market for 12 years and has been taken by millions and the company is unaware it has caused any such problems Company Cooperates He said the company is cooperating in extensive medical studies to determine if Valium might be as sociated with any birth defect Even if a relationship does exist Safra said the actual risk of a woman who has taken Valium giving birth to child with a cleft lip is less than onehalf of 1 percent quite low in light of the 2 percent incidence of major defects nationwide However the Center for Disease Control CDC scien tists urged doctors to weigh the potential therapeutic ad vantage of prescribing Val ium to pregnant women until their preliminary findings are confirmed Birth defects are a com plex thing Safra said Thursday in an interview Many other factors could be involved The Atlanta area women whose babies had birth de fects were specifically asked about the use of tranquilizers and were shown a plastic card containing several sam ples oftranquilizers The children of mothers who had taken Valium had the lip or cleft palate as an isolated defect They didnt have other major defects said Safra He noted that with modern surgical methods a cleft lip and a cleft palate can be repaired Mother of Missing Hoffa Succumbs medical examiner be lieves The similarities at least in my mind make me feel they were most probably by the same assailant Dr Ronald Wright said Thursday There is another theory that at least two of those sex slayings might be connected to 33 other similar killings in five western states Detective Mus soline of the Dade County homicide unit said he was operating on the theory that the killings last month of Ronnie Gorlin 27 and Elyse Rapp 21 were committed by the same man And he said he and Sgt Erwin Carlstedt of Sonoma County Calif were developing a theorythat those two were perpetrated by one man as he journeyed from west to east Wright said he believed the Gorlin and Rapp murders were the work of the same person who abducted Barba ra Stephens 23 from a south Dade County shopping
