New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - July 22, 2011, New Braunfels, Texas 12 I Friday, July 22, 2011 | herald-zeitung.com U.K. police to investigate phone ‘pinging’ L0NOON(AP) Scotland Yard, still reeling from the alleged police roie in Britain's phone hacking scandal, was asked Thursday to investigate another explosive claim: that journalists bribed officers to locate people by tracking their cell phone signals. The practice is known as "pinging" liec ause of the way cell phone signals bounce oft relay towers as they try to find reception. lenny jones, a member ot the tioard that oversees the Metropolitan Police Authorit>, i lied claims that reporters at the now* defund Nc*ws of the World tabloid paid off corrupt police officers to trace cell phones. The allegation was made by the late Scan Hoare, a former News of thi’ World reporter who spoke to the New York Times about skullduggery' at th(’ tabloid. Hoare — who was firc*d in 2005 — said that officers were paid nearly $500 (300 pounrls) i)er trace. The f)aper c iterl a st'cond unnamiMi former News of th(’ World journalist as corroborating Hoare's claim. Hoare was found de.id on Monday at his home near London; police say the dc'ath is not suspic ious. Jones asked Scotland Yard to examine the records of all cases in which police accessed phone-tracking data "to ensure those were valid requests." In an interview, |ones said that going through the cell phone trac ing requt'sts "is a relatively sim[)le way of finding corrupt officers" given that it would fx' c k*ar who was being targeted and when. "The information is there and you can chec k," she said. Pinging joins a host of alleged media misdeeds t)eing f)ut undf'r the micro scope as police, politicians, and the public weigh allegations that journalists at Rupc'rt MurdcK h's News of the World engaged in years of law-l(*ss behavior to get sc(x>f)s. What l)egan in 2005 as a slow-burning scandal over one reporter's efforts to s (‘xp has )y on voK e mails has oded into a crisis that shaken Murdoih's media empire and led to r(*signations of two of S( ot-land Yard's most senior offi{(*rs.
