Tie for Crime Stoppers award ByMondoMouNrlt Ttie Herald-Zeitung This year's Comal Crime SropptTs Investigator of the Year rate ended in a tie. The triumphant lnvc‘sti-gators solved a case together. And they are so g(K)d, that they had solvc'd the crime and gotten a corifession even l>pfore the victim knew she was victimized. "She expressed a lot of gratituck*," said one of this year's rtx ipients, Det. [uan Leyba of the Comal County Sheriff's Office. "She thought she had just lost her wallet." Leyba received a plaque recognizing his win Wi'dnesiJay miring a ceremony at Mamacita's Restaurant-Cantina in New Braunfels. He told how he and fellow Investigator of the Year Deputy Scott I ange received an anonymous text message through Crime Stoppers alerting them to a grt)Ui) of Canyon Ttigh Scnooi students involved in the crime. One of the girls worked at a store wh(>re the vic- tim had left her wallet, Leyba said. He said the tip-* ster said the girl spent the money from tw wallet and used credit cards for her own advantage. They got the girl to confes ancl then worked their way backward to discciver the vic-tim's identity, Leyba said. He said they told the victim and she thanked them. "Without Crime Stoppers and espec iaily the text program, we couldn't do the* what we've been doing," Leyba said. The Investigator of the Year award is open to anyone who used the Crime Stoppers program to solve a case, said joshua Wright^ chairman of the Crime Stoppers board of directors. This is Lange^ seconrl year in a row winning the award. Last year, he won for cracking a case using a text tip as well.
