New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - June 8, 2011, New Braunfels, Texas New Braunfels herald-zeitung.com SERVING NEW BRAUNFELS SINCE 1852 What you want to know, when you want to know it. Today’s New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung has a new look and a new size in an effort to bring a better paper to you, our subscribers. The staff of this newspaper put off changing the size of the paper as long as possible. We are one of the last papers to make the switch. In the past, when paper sizes changed, those who stuck to larger widths were charged a premium for buying a product that was no longer the industry standard. To steal a phrase from the Gruene Historic District, the Herald-Zeitung gently resisted change as long as we could, but when it came time to change it gave us the opportunity to examine the design of the whole paper. We did the best we could — kept the type large and organized the pages in such a way that we did not lose content. In fact, we saw it as a chance to expand our content. One of the Herald-Zeitung’s great successes is its accessibility to its readers. Readers have always been welcome to contribute content to the paper — photos, sports scores and commentary. Changing technology and the format of this redesign will enable us to do it more than ever. The paper has expanded to make room for more content from you. • News tips are always welcome. There is a “Submit your News” button on herald-zeitung.com or email aphillips@herald-zeitung.com or call (830) 625-9144 and ask for the newsroom. • Did you witness a news event? Send us your photos of accidents, fires, weather events. Email them to aphillips@herald-zeitung.com. • Did you go on a great trip this year that other readers might want to hear about? We started a travel page every Sunday and would love to run your photos, videos, travel stories and tips. Email aphillips@herald-zeitung.com or stop by the newspaper office at 707 Landa St. This is an expansion of our already popular Vacation Photo contest. • Do you play on a recreation league and want to see your results and photos in the paper? Send them in to choffman@herald-zeitung. • Does your child play on a Little League team, a swim team or a club team and you’d like to see them in the paper? Send in scores, photos and stories. We’ll run them. • Do you enjoy debate? The Herald-Zeitung Opinion page and the comments fea ture on herald-zeitung.com have been a great place for community dialogue. Let’s step it up a notch. Every other Tuesday, the Opinion page will feature a Point / Counterpoint section, where two readers will share two sides of the same issue. Want to contribute? Send an e-mail to letters@herald-zeitung.com or call managing editor Autumn Phillips at (830) 625-9144 ext. 220. • Looking for a place to worship or curious about other congregations? We’ve asked churches across Comal County to send us information about their church leadership, program offerings and service times. Want to participate? Email kthomas@herald-zeitung.com or call (830) 625-9144 ext. 221. • Have some advice for newcomers? Comal County and New Braunfels are growing — fast. Which means a lot of Herald-Zeitung readers just moved here. Every Saturday, we’re running a feature called “New Here?" where we ask locals to give newcomers advice about how to get involved in the community. To offer your insight, email photographer Laura McKenzie at Imckenzie@herald-zeitung.com or call (830) 625-9144 ext. 227. There’s more news you can use. There are those who have an hour in the morning to read the newspaper and there are those that have a moment to glance at herald-zeitung.com in the middle of the day. In addition to our regular coverage, the Herald-Zeitung is adding quick updates throughout the day — both in print, on our website and through social media tools. • The Daily Commute. In the early morning and in the late afternoon before you hit the road, we’ll post traffic updates to herald- You’ll find even more on the Web. • In recent months, the Wednesday paper has featured a column by food writer Laura Lopez. She answers cooking questions from readers and offers fun, timely recipes. This feature will continue but now it has its own page on herald-zeitung.com.
