"I love being in the ring, and it’s rewarding, but it’s hard work all year round.’’ Krause, who’s been showing for 10 years, began raising steers when she was about 8. Her father has owned cattle her entire life. "You get attached to the steers every year, hut that’s the way it goes,’’ Krause said. Krause, a senior, will attend Angelo State University in the fall and work on an agricultural business degree. She hopes to show heifers in college and judge rodeos. In her fourth year of sIkjw-ing steers, Selynda Grims-ley-Cox, 11-year-old New Braunfels I FA student, said preparing for each year’s show is a lot of hard work. "You have to wash and blow dry them to get them set up for display,” Grims-ley-Cox said, holding a blue ribbon for her steer, Ferb. "They have to get used to you before you can show them. "Knowing steers trust you is a good feeling because they don’t trust very many people,” she said. Earlier Friday, lambs were in the limelight. Kaitlyn Craft took home Grand Champion and Kolton Neuse won Reserve Grand Champion. The event has 549 exhibitors and 1,001 overall entries. The animal auction begins at 10 a.m. today. Animals for sale include swine, goats, sheep, steers, rabbits, turkeys, broilers and heifers. For information, call David at (830) 481-6572 or Bruce at (210) 938-5319. Young homemakers shine at Friday fair race to the cashier to purchase them. The youth homemaking and art fair is an organization dedicated to raising money for students’ future education, said Deborah Koepp, Comal County Homemaking and Art Fair chairwoman. It is not connected with the Comal County Junior Livestock Show Association show and sale. Children were allowed to submit up to five entries under one of the 21 categories. The largest number of entries were in the photography, cakes and cookies categories. Cheryl Dannheim, 18-year- old Hill Country Central 4-H student, spent all day Thursday preparing for Friday’s fair. “I took off school (Wednesday) to bake and prepare everything,” Dannheim said. “My brother and sister do this, too, so between all of us, we had to bake 15 things.” Dannheim has been entering baked goods in the fair for 10 years. “You have to choose competitive recipes that have multiple steps in order to win,” she said. “I went through family recipes and family life magazines to find the right ones.” She settled on five baked goods — toffee bar cookies, German chocolate cake, fresh JEEP FACTORY swtamc:. The other scholarship recipient, Kameron Koepp, entered a homemade iron lamp, yeast rolls, sugar cookies and zucchini bread. “I picked the recipes because they sounded good,” Koepp said. “It wasn’t hard to follow the recipe, but sometimes, when you mess up, you get to eat what’s left.” LAURA McKENZIE/Herald-Zeitung Karen Zercher, almost 13, feeds Waffle, a lamb belonging to Jarrett Underwood, 11, on Friday.
