"I started convincing him in the beginning that there was no risk on my side. Having one less kidney wouldn’t change my life. In six weeks time, it was a no brainer (to donate). "My parents have made so many sacrifices for me,” Marty Robles, III said. “What a better way to give back to them." resting began for the transplant in October. “I wasn’t expecting the kidney transplant to be within the same year,” Marty Robles III said. “In November, the date was set, and it hit me pretty quickly.” Marty Robles III, an account manager for Universal Forest Products in San Antonio, pre pared to take two weeks off for the surgery. “I thought you had to be a full match to donate, but you don’t have to be,” Marty Robles III said. “You can switch kidneys with someone else who matches.” "We didn’t go into any of this without knowing what would happen,” Marty Robles, Jr. said. “This may be a big deal in our lives, but it can be easily done. A lot of people don’t realize that.” On Dec. 17, 2010, Marty Robles, Jr. received his eldest son’s kidney at Methodist Transplant Center in Houston. “I was expecting a smaller scar,’ Marty Robles Jr. said. "My scar is about seven or eight inches. The doctors told me my son had such a large kidney that it would be functioning like two for a while. "I didn’t realize they don’t remove my other kidneys,” Marty Robles, Jr. said. “I have three kidneys right now, even though two are not functioning.” Marty Robles, III was released from the hospital three days post-surgery and returned to work two weeks ago. Marty Robles, Jr. spent six days in the hospital and expects to be delivering mail again within the next couple of weeks. "After the surgery, I felt like a whole new person,” Marty Robles, Jr. said. "It’s a full eight-week recovery. We’ve been through so much these past three years. This transplant was a piece of cake because we’ve been through a lot already.” Marty Robles Jr. can now scratch “a healthy life” off of his Christmas wish list. "He’s going to be around a lot longer and be the dad he was when I was a lot younger,” Marty Robles III said. “It was worth it.”DRUNKEN CONTINUED FROM Page 1 said Mel Koeliler, Comal County’s chief misdemeanor prosecutor. “Local judges have also made themselves available to review and sign the blood search warrants for law enforcement. Those Judges participating are District Court Judges Jack Robison, Gary Steel and Dib Waldrip; both of the Comal County Court at Law Judges Randy Gray and Charles Stephens II, and Justice of the Peace Precinct 2 Judge Susan Dvorak,” Koehler said. The Comal County Criminal District Attorney’s Office is committed to working with law enforcement in efforts to make the roads in Comal The new report by a panel of ret ired and current military officers says that keeping women out of combat posts prohibits them from serving in roughly 10 percent of Marine Corps and Army occupational specialties and thus is a barrier to promotions and advancement.CORRAL OLD GRINGO Perfect for every Rodeo outfit!pancing P0n Fashion Boutique 249 W. "Appreciation is also given to Christus Santa Rosa Hospital — New Braunfels for their continued support and assistance in this program," Koehler said. Comal County Court at Law judge Randy Gray said the weekend night wake-ups are just part of what a judge needs to do. “Were here to do what we can to make sure that people play by the rules and comply with the law,” Gray said, describing no-refusal as “verv efficient.” "Getting woken up at 3:30 a.m. is never fun, but it comes with the territory. We get calls from hospitals on mental health commitments at 3 a.m., so this is just part of what we do,” he said. “I go to bed half-expecting I’m going to get a phone call from a blood search warrant or an order for protective custody from a hospital. You gath-er your wits about you as quickly as you can and review the paperwork that’s been presented,” Gray said. What has made it easier is a fax system where the hospital sends over affidavits and other documentation to the judge’s home. Gray said he believes that publicity on no-refusal has reduced incidents of drunken driving. "We’ve had fewer people driving while intoxicated because they knew they might get stopped and be subject to a blood search warrant. I think heightened awareness is a good thing,” he said.COMBAT CONTINUED FROM Page 1 mission is direct combat on the ground. On Friday, a special panel was meeting to polish the final draft of a report that recommends the policy be eliminated "to create a level playing field for all qualified service members." If it were approved by the Defense Department, it would be yet another sizeable social change in a force that in the last year has seen policy changes to allow gays and lesbians to serve openly for the first time in the military and to allow Navy women to serve on submarines for the first time. The newest move is being recommended by the Military Leadership Diversity Commission, established by Congress two years ago, and expected to send its report to Congress and President Barack Obama in the spring. The Army is doing its own internal study of the question as well.
