SEGUIN AREA IS BETTER PREPARED FOR HURRICANE SEASON -lust into the 2007 storm season, the state has run disaster drills and local emergency management officials believe this region is ready to play its part in the event that another major hurricane slams into the Texas coast. I bis past week, the Texas Department of Public Safety’s Division of Emergency management ran a major hurricane preparedness exercise that war-gamed what state and regional officials will have to do the next time a major storm strikes. The heightened effort came in the wake of the 2005 season, which had a record number of named storms. One, I lurricane Katrina, devastated New Orleans. A second, Hurricane Rita barely a month later, hit the Texas coast near Beaumont, causing widespread damage, a difficult coastal evacuation of 3.7 million Texans and dozens of deaths. Correction New Braunfels City Attorney Alan Wayland was misidentified in a photograph that ran in Sunday’s edition of the I lerald-Zeitung. We regret the error.
