New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - May 16, 2007, New Braunfels, Texas Page 2B — Herald-Zeitung — Wednesday, May 16, 2007 CRIB NOTES Life on the front lines of motherhood WINTER PROSAPIO Parental veterans advice is terrifying I have a special request of all those parents who have managed to raise children beyond the age of 18. Please stop telling me “Oh boy, just wait until she’s a teenager” or “You think this is bad.. I feel like I’ve just sat down to a gorgeous chocolate cake with one of those melt-in-your-mouth frostings and there are three people sitting around me giving me extremely detailed descriptions of how tight my pants are going to be in the morning. And where. After these warnings, it’s tough not to turn and look in horror at my children, sensing I'm in possession of what is apparently the single most volatile substance in the universe. Combined with time, my daughters will become a force more frightening than Attila the I kin and a chronic case of hemorrhoids. Makes you wonder: is teenage angst why they always locked those princesses away in the tower? Anyway, on behalf of all the mothers who have yet to experience the emotional mine field of the teenage years in their children, I’d like to ask for a cease-fire from all you veterans out there. Trust me, we know it’s coming. We had the barest glimpse. We had 2- and 3-year-olds, and many times we imagined just how tough it was going to be when we couldn’t just secure them to a car seat and drive them until they fell asleep. We imagined the challenge we’d face when they got dexterous enough to tie their sheets into knots and escape from the tower, the theme to Mission Impossible playing in their MP3 players. We? know theres a semi-truck full of hormones barreling down the road at us. We can't dodge it or negotiate it much. Fact is we're strapped in this ride, hands at IO and 2, hoping for the best—or at least a decent airbag. Given that there is no escape, it’s time to just politely smile at the warnings and stop listening I’m going to revel in this time before the angst hits. I'm going to dig into these little happy chocolate cakes, eat them all up and hope that 1 11 be able to find my special dress that goes with just such occasions. So if you see me sitting with someone, my hands over my ears and wearing a big billowing dress, you’ll know why.
