On Thursday, the department will launch a program offering free smoke detectors to area residents, Canyon Lake Fire Lt. Jeff Schultz said. Smoke detectors — complete with batteries — are being supplied through the offices of San Antonio attorney Wayne Wright. “We are the first department in Comal County to participate in the program,” Schultz said. No fire-related deaths have occurred in the Canyon Lake area in the past five years, Canyon Lake Fire Chief Shawn Wherry said. However, smoke detectors are an important weapon in the fight against fire-related injuries and death, he said. “Any notification of smoke or fire is valuable,” Wherry said. “Scientific studies have shown that our ability to smell is one of the first senses that goes when we fall asleep. A lot of times, people never smell smoke if they are sleeping.” New Braunfels fire officials said Monday that a couple in their 90s were saved when a smoke detector alerted them to a house fire Sunday afternoon. The two seniors, who were napping when their attic caught fire, were woken by a smoke detector recently installed through the New Braunfels Fire Department’s free smoke detector pro gram. The New Braunfels program, in place since 1995, provides the free smoke detectors, batteries and installation for seniors. Bulverde and Spring Branch fire officials said their departments do not have free smoke detector programs in place. Bulverde Fire Chief Charlie Ivy said he is hoping to get his department involved in Wright’s program.
