New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - April 4, 2007, New Braunfels, Texas Page 2A — Herald-Zeitung — Wednesday, April 4, 2007 Ex-employee in custody following an armed standoff at nursing home GARIANO (AP) — A nursing home employee who barricaded himself inside tile facility with a gun after getting fired Tuesday has been taken into custody, police said. The standoff lasted about three hours. “Nobody was hurt, and that’s a good thing,’’ police spokesman Joe Ham said. Emergency workers were going inside the nursing home to check on the residents and employees left inside, Ham said Some got out during the standoff, but Ham said he did not know how many. Ernie Smith, 27, was a janitor at the Castle Manor nursing home, located in a residential neighborhood of a Dallas suburb. He was fired Tuesday but came back later with a gun, Ham said. Nursing home employee Donald Eubanks told The Dallas Morning News that Smith liad worked there for about three months and “seemed to be a nice guy.’’ Smith’s mother told KTVT that her son went back to the facility “because he wanted the whole wide world to know how he had been mistreated on the job.” She said he told her by phone that he didn’t want to hurt anyone. His nephew talked him into surrendering, she said. Although police could not confirm if Smith held any hostages, a man whose mother is a resident at the nursing home told The Dallas Morning News that he spoke on the phone with a nurse who had a gun stuck in her face.
