The standoff lasted about three hours. "Nobody was hurt, and that's a good thing," police spokesman Joe Ham said. Emergency workers were going inside the nursing home to check on the residents and employees left inside, Ham said Some got out during the standoff, but Ham said he did not know how many. Ernie Smith, 27, was a janitor at the Castle Manor nursing home, located in a residential neighborhood of a Dallas suburb. He was fired TUesday but came back later with a gun, Ham said. Nursing home employee Donald Eubanks told The Dallas Morning News that Smith had worked there for about three months and "seemed to be a nice guy." > Smith's mother told KTVT that her son went back to the facility "because he wanted the whole wide world to know at nursing home he didn't want to hurt anyone. His nephew talked him into surrendering, she said.
