New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - April 1, 2007, New Braunfels, Texas Sunday, April 1, 2007 - Herald-Zeitung - Page 7A MANLY PRIDE DAVID INGRAM/Heratd-Zeitung New Braunfels Fire Chief John Herber, left, and patrolman David Olson square off in the Best Legs contest for Rock 'n' Roll for Kids 2007 As of Friday, Chief Herber had raised about $2,000 compared to Olson's $350. Police raid Louisiana cockfightin arenas NEW ORLEANS (AP) - State police raided two cockfighting arenas at opposite ends of Louisiana where illegal gambling allegedly took place, the latest sign of a crackdown on the blood sport in the lone state where it is legal. Raids were conducted Friday night at the Sunrise Game Club, just south of Logansport in north Louisiana, and at the Milk Dairy Game Club in Tickfaw, about 50 miles northwest of New Orleans in southern Louisiana. The owners of both arenas were arrested, state police said. Cockfi^iting is legal in Louisiana, which became the last state to allow the blood sport after New Mexico banned it on March 12. Louisiana's political leaders, long reluctant to speak out against cockfighting, are shifting their views and parishes in north Louisiana have begun to ban the fights. "It was a cockfighting casino," said state police spokesman Doug Pierrelee about the Sunrise Game Club. While cockfighting is legal, "gambling as a business is illegal and that's the basis of what is happening here," said Don Bur-kett, the district attorney for Sabine and De Soto parishes. Sunrise Game Club owner James Butler, 38, of Martinsville, Texas, was arrested and booked into the DeSoto Parish Detention Center on charges of illegal gambling, contributing to the delinquency of juveniles, racketeering and money laundering. Texas authorities simultaneously conducted a raid of Butler's home, Pierrelee said. A handful of the more than 100 people attending Friday night's cockfights at the Sunrise Game Club also were arrested. Five men were cited for contributing to the delinquency of juveniles for allegedly having children at the fight with them. TWo others were booked on drug charges. Pet food contaminant more deadly to cats Felines died in larger numbers WASHINGTON (AP) - A greater sensitivity of cats to a chemical found in plastics and pesticides could explain why they've died in larger numbers than have dogs after eating contaminated pet food, experts said Saturday. The small number of confirmed reports of pet deaths bolstered by a far larger number of unconfirmed anecdot- al reports suggests cats were more susceptible to poisoning by the chemical melamine that tainted the now recalled pet food, officials with the Food and Drug Administration and American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said Saturday. "I am concerned we have a situation where we have a sensitive species and it is the cat," said Steven Hansen, a veterinary toxicologist and director of the ASPCA's Ani-. mal Poison Control center in Urbana, 111. Testing by the FDA and Cornell University has found melamine in samples of recalled pet food as well as in crystal form in the urine and kidney tissue of dead cats. They've also found the chemical, in apparently raw form in concentrations as high as 6.6 percent, in wheat gluten used as ingredient of the recalled cat and dog foods, said Stephen Sundlof, the FDA's chief veterinarian. "There was a sizable amount of melamine. You could see crystals in the wheat gluten," Sundlof told The Associated Press, HUNT CONTINUED FROM Page 1A Event has become tradition for some was the parks department's third flashlight egg hunt, Kunkel said this was the first year the entire hunt was held after dark. In the past two years, the first few age groups were able to hunt for eggs during twilight. "We kept getting the time wrong," Kunkel said. "This year we consulted the Farmer's Almanac and we got it right. The sun set at 7:52 p.m." While families were waiting for sundown, they also were encouraged to take advantage of games, a moon bounce, face painting and pictures with the Easter bunny How- ever, the eggs were still the main event. Gavyn Leos gathered a basket full of the colorful treasures during the hunt. At 15 months old, however, his parents still had to remind him that plastic eggs are not edible. Gavyn's mother, Melissa Leos, said the whole family turned out to watch him take part in his first Easter egg hunt. "This is our first everything. It's so exciting," said Melissa Leos, who was accompanied by her husband and in-laws. The event was open to children of all ages, but divided into groups of ages 3 and younger, 4 to 6, 7 to 9 and 10 and up. Kunkel said organizers wanted to be sure children had fun and were all able to gather a good supply of eggs. For those who were unable to find enough Easter treats, there was a hidden trail with additional eggs. Victoria De la Garza, 8, and her 5-year-old brother Nicholas said they were expert egg hunters after participating in the event this past year. "You've just got to pick them up fast," Victoria advised. Xavier and Joanna De la Garza of New Braunfels said they bring their children to the flashlight egg hunt as a way to kick off the family's Easter celebrations. "We have a big family so we'll have our own egg hunt on Easter with a pinata and all the family," Xavier De la Garza said "But this is a great prelude to Easter. It really gets the kids excited."
